Hi! Just a simple question, I was wondering how to create a list of different lambda functions like so:
[(lambda x: x*i) for i in range(3)]
Ideally, this should return an output like this:
[lambda x: x*0, lambda x: x*1, lambda x: x*2]
However, the actual output is like so:
[lambda x: x*2, lambda x: x*2, lambda x: x*2]
How would I go about producing the desired output? Thanks!

The reason your lambdas are failing is that they contain references to a global variable i (since i is not a parameter). lambdas = [(lambda x: x*i) for i in range(3)] print([l(2) for l in lambdas]) # prints [4, 4, 4] The answer to your question is that if i is made to be a parameter, there will be a closure and its value will be saved as a constant in those lambda functions. def lambda_maker(factor): return lambda x: x * factor lambdas = [lambda_maker(i) for i in range(3)] print([l(2) for l in lambdas]) # prints [0, 2, 4]

map applies a function to every element of an iterable. Sometimes these functions are very simple operations; for example, if I wanted to double every number in a list. It's wasteful to define an entire new function (with the def keyword) just for this one simple operation. Lambda creates a callable function that we can use. Here's an example of how we could create that and use it with map. numbers = [1, 5, 20, 50] map(lambda x:x * 2, numbers)

lambda is just an alternate form of def. There's really nothing super special about it. This code def func(arg1): return arg1*2 Is equivalent to this func = lambda arg1:arg1*2 That's really it. Anyplace you may want lambda you have the option to use def instead. The only reason you may want lambda is to save a few lines of code. FWIW lmabda, map, filter and reduce were on the BDFL's list to be removed in python3, but he was outvoted by people who were used to these functions from other languages. They are very rarely used. Since you seem to be a beginner, I recommend you ignore these
