Think of a linked list as something like a Rolodex. Each entry has some information, usually about a person or business but in principle it can be anything. And you have the entry after it. If you can spin it backwards you also have the one before it. This would be a doubly-linked list. How you organize your list is up to you. It could just be in sequential order of the object you add, always updating the last node to point to the node you're adding. Or you could do it in order according to some function - perhaps operator< by default. Then if you try to add something you can guarantee your list will be sorted by that function at all times. Also consider with that if you want to go forwards five entries, you can't just do that directly. You need to go forward by one entry five times. In terms of what the standard containers std::list and std::vector would provide, you can't say obj.std::list::begin()+5 but you can say obj.std::vector::begin() + 5 (where obj is our list or vector as appropriate). But you can say for(int i=0; i < 5; ++i) { ++my_iterator; } regardless of which type the iterator actually came from. In this sense the ++iterator methods are generic, while the iterator + n methods are specific to things like std::vectorthat allow random access. More on reddit.com
I'm learning data structures in python with a history in C++ and I need help.
Not exactly, in C++ you also can do this
linkedlist.head->next->next->next->value
Does this mean its contained in the head?
Python is probably confusing you because it hides the fact that its a reference to the next object without any pointers and stuff.

June 2, 2026 - The final operation we will learn in this chapter is the retrieval of a specific value in the linked list. To accomplish this, the method should start at the head of the list and iterate through each node, checking if the node’s data matches the search value. Here is a practical implementation of this operation:

As with everything you have learned at App Academy, you know that practice makes perfect! Following the instructions below, you'll implement a Node class and a LinkedList class with methods to append, remove, and access the linked nodes within the list. You'll begin by completing the Node __init__ method so that each Node instance has "_value" and "_next" properties. Remember that Python errors out if there are empty method definitions, so you'll replace the pass in each block with the code you write to complete the method.

Linked List Operations in Python
To work with linked lists, we first need to define a ListNode class, which represents a node in the linked list. ... class ListNode: def __init__(self, value=0, next=None): self.value = value # Holds the value or data of the node self.next = next # Points to the next node in the linked list; ...

Again, this part is really important, so don't rush through it. Take the code line-by-line and make sure everything makes sense. If the LinkedList already has a head , iterate through the next reference in every Element until you reach the end of the list. Set next for the end of the list to ...

The first line handles the base case by doing nothing. The next two lines split the list into head and tail. The last two lines print the list. The end argument of the print statement keeps Python from printing a newline after each node.

Python interview question guide: how to code a linked list
April 19, 2018 - In the code above, once we find the node we want to delete, we set the previous node’s “nextNode” to the deleted node’s “nextNode” to completely cut it out of the list. **NOTE These are the time complexities for the node structure above, which is most likely to appear on an interview. In practical cases, you can store attributes in a LinkedList class to lower these complexities.**

Recursion can be very useful for certain linked list problems, like reversing a list or merging two sorted lists. The recursive call stack can act as an implicit "prev pointer" in certain cases. Always be sure your solution works for edge cases, even if they‘re not tested in the examples. It‘s better to over-prepare than be caught off guard in an interview. If you want to practice more linked list problems, here are some great resources:
