r/Dyslexia on Reddit: Reading pens
January 31, 2022 -

I would love to hear you thoughts on the reading pens, my daughter is 9 and loves books but really struggles with reading.

Her dad is concerned that it she will become too reliant on it but I feel it will increase her pleasure in books and that it is a useful tool for her in class if she wanted too.

(Background: I'm a dyslexic librarian.) Before I got good at reading, teachers used to actively encourage me to read along to audio books. The belief was that hearing the words as I looked at them would build a connection between the two and help me learn to read. I see reading pens as a more effective version of reading along to an audio book. The pen forces you to look at the words as they're read to you. It won't go too fast for you to follow along, and it keeps your place in the story as you read. (Which were all issues I had with audio books as a kid.) So, hypothetically, using the pen might actually make your daughter better at reading. . Some other things to consider: Your daughter is about the age when dyslexic kids give up on reading. Keeping her motivated is more important than making sure she isn't reliant on accessibility tools. Your daughter is also approaching the age where kids start refusing to use their academic accommodations. And using a fancy piece of technology is way less embarrassing than having a special aid read everything to you during tests. Sometimes, being "too" reliant on assistive technology is the difference between dependence and self-sufficiency. And in that case, it's stupid to forgo the assistive technology. (For example, I spent 20 years trying to use paper maps. It didn't work. So why would I stop using Google Maps when it's the difference between needing my parents to chauffeur me around like a child, and driving myself to the grocery store?)

I don't think you should keep your child inside of a pen to make them read. /s.

Reader pens for dyslexia
February 10, 2024 - They are designed to feel like a large pen and feature OCR technology (Optical Character Recognition) which enables the user to scan and highlight any text (both typed and handwritten). It will then read it aloud to the user in real time. They can be used with editing software and dictionary programs to assist with reading comprehension and even help the user learn a foreign language. Dyslexia pen readers have a number of distinct and extremely useful functions that other assistive tools (scanning pens, note-taking app, speech programs, text readers etc.) can’t do.

r/specialed on Reddit: Reader pens for dyslexia
July 15, 2024 -

Hi! Does anyone have experience with reader/scanning pens? The research looks promising. My school has agreed to buy a set of 5 for my learning center… but I have no idea which brand to get. I can’t afford the ones that are at the top of a few dyslexia-related website’s lists of the best pens (c-pen). I bought one for 70 bucks from a brand called Svannto or something like that. It seems to work just fine. I’m just scared to buy a bunch of expensive tech stuff without knowing the quality. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Oh, I use them! I have the ScanMarker Reader Pens and a Pro Pen! We got a huge grant and bought like ten Readers to distribute to students across the school (I have a few who keep one with them for their insanely severe dyslexia, and then some teachers keep one in their rooms to be used as needed each period). These are the ones that need to be Bluetoothed or USB connected to their computer/chromebook and used with a web app to scan text. It actually works really well once the kids get the hang of it. They used it to hear audio versions of their text or to simply scan questions into the computer and convert it into the OpenDyslexic font so they could read it themselves. The main drawback was a fairly short battery life if they were paired via Bluetooth (my students estimated about 2-3 class periods of regular use, so maybe a couple hours). Using the USB eliminated that issue, but it was a little unwieldy but doable. Those pens are only like.... okay they are $200, but go on sale occasionally and they might do school/bulk discounts. Free product disclaimer, but they did also send me a Pro Pen later on to review and keep. I gave it to my student who was using his pen the most, and he vastly preferred the Pro because it has a much longer battery life, and he could directly Bluetooth his Airpods to the Pen instead of connecting to the computer. The software is directly part of the pen instead of having to transfer to a computer/app for scanning/reading. This student had severe dyslexia and phonological gaps due to hearing loss but both pens helped him be completely independent in gen ed. I think you could easily get away with the ScanMarker Airs ($150) depending on the age of your students. They do genuinely work well and if we got another grant I would consider getting more. Not to like, shill too hard, but I did a lot of research before we bought our first set and I've appreciated their customer service since then.
