It’s funny after massive layoffs and building closures I don’t see the union bragging about their massive win in the last contract anymore. We have 25 drivers working preload now. Saw a dude crying yesterday after he was told to go home.

United Parcel Service said it has reduced its management workforce by about 14,000 positions so far this year and its operational workforce by 34,000 positions.
The company disclosed the workforce reductions for 2025 in an earnings statement to investors and analysts.
UPS said it is well positioned to navigate the coming holiday shipping season, and restructuring efforts have resulted in cost savings of about $2.2 billion so far this year.
Though third-quarter profit and revenue fell, results were better than expected. Shares rallied more than 12% in premarket trading.

Was just told by a co worker I will be losing my job in the next 2 months, anyone brought in after 2022 is gone. I work at the UPS in Ontario California and if anyone can confirm this that’d be great. Thank you!
UPS gross profit for the twelve months ending September 30, 2023 was $71.21 billion which is a 3.47% decline from 2022…
However, UPS annual gross profit for 2022 was a record setting $74.152B, which was a 3.08% increase from 2021 and the highest profit UPS had ever made
UPS annual gross profit for 2021, was before 2022, the record highest profit UPS had ever made at $71.93 billion which was a 12.32% increase from 2020.
In other words 2023 would have been a record setting profit number any year besides 2021 and 2022. Those numbers also show profits are still up 9% from 2020 when people had no choice but to use us and this years profits were basically identical to 2021.
Don’t believe UPS’s bullshit. Numbers don’t lie. The only reason for driver layoffs is to try to break that 2022 record in 2024. The union needs to speak up.
Who else is frustrated by these recent layoffs. I learned today preloaders are being laid off and replaced with laid off drivers because full-time employees have priority, even if they don't have seniority. Thankfully I'm not on the current list of preloaders and my shop steward said there's a little bit of a buffer with a few people lower than me on the ladder. Hopefully it doesn't reach me, but my other saving grace is I don't have a favorable job (de-bagger), so I may stay on just because of that. *L*
You're a dedicated de-bagger? Do you not also split and load a truck or 2? Not even during peak was my belt able to have that. Best of luck to you but it sounds like your hub way over estimated their volume post peak.
Just because you have a job no one else doesn't mean anything. It's all based on seniority.
I was just laid off from UPS today I was a scanner and loader. I was hired on September 28 and orientation they told me that our class wasn’t considered seasonal so I took it as we had the jobs and union been taking money out of my checks so I don’t know why I was laid off, the lady told me cause of low volume but I told her that I wasn’t seasonal, she said I don’t know what to tell u. I don’t know what to do should I talk to union rep on Monday, will union still take money out of my account even though I’m not working. Just bs to me cause I busted my ass and the people and my orientation class still have there job I was the only one from my class that got laid off. I feel like they did my wrong. And I also had a seizure the other day at work to so I don’t know if this the reason why they laid me off to
Talk with the union.
Whatever your local is, look it up and give them a call.
Laid off as in the job is terminated or laid off as in "you're still employed but we don't have enough volume to put you on the schedule at the moment"? That second scenario happens to low seniority employees whenever the is a drop in volume.
UPS is laying off more employees amid effort to boost profitability
Who here is part of the 12k layoffs? Are they offering severance? Insurance? Been giving no information except a layoff date. Local union is no help
If you got the lay off call this week (or know somebody that did), which department were you in? Job title (if you feel like sharing), and what district/city? I’m very curious as to who got the devastating news today. I’ve heard rumors it was 5,000 in inside sales, but 0 confirmation.
Photo above – Matthew McConaughey proposes to UPS driver/girlfriend Jenna Elfman in the film EdTV (1999). This was before UPS drivers earned $50 an hour, so the motive was love, not financial gain.
Hey, Joe . . . wanna earn $50 an hour driving a delivery van? Local stuff only. No long haul, or overnight trips away from home. That’s like . . . zowie . . . $100,000 a year. Plus health and retirement plans. More than a teacher. No high school diploma needed, let alone a college degree.
Yeah . . . that was 2023. This year United Parcel Service is offering “buyouts” to 20,000 drivers. If not enough employees take the hint, terminations are sure to follow. (see link at bottom). Seems like it’s tough to make a buck in a market-based economy when your labor costs soar faster than inflation.
I wish no misfortune to befall the big-brown guys in their cute shorts. They sometimes even deliver my Amazon stuff. That may be because Amazon drivers earn $19 an hour instead of $50, and there are always Amazon driver vacancies.
Fed Ex drivers are doing even worse – average is $17 an hour. Teamsters get $22. Postal workers get $20 an hour, and you have to pass a civil service exam to prove you can read and write, don’t have a felony record, and are drug free.
Actually, I’m assuming all these drivers are drug free, and can read and write. They get the address right more than 99% of the time. Although my replacement Chase Amazon credit card appears to be lost. It was sent registered mail more than a week ago and has a United States Postal Service tracking number, but hasn’t moved since July 3rd. It's still a thousand miles away. Actually, it probably HAS moved, but whoever has it – legally or otherwise – didn’t scan it. This is why I missed Amazon Prime Day, Jeff. Your credit card didn’t arrive. I was eyeing that $69.99 SDKWDH LED therapy mask, which is guaranteed to reduce wrinkles. Who doesn't want smaller wrinkles, and bigger boobs?
Back to the UPS layoffs. So on the basis of this comparison, the United Parcel Service $50 hourly contract was a crazy outlier. Completely off the charts. I wish I’d predicted that layoffs would happen. Wait, I did, right after the contract was signed in 2023. And I pointed out that paying high school dropouts more than a teacher could be demoralizing to teachers, and tempt them to quit their violent schools for a safer career delivering packages. But they’d certainly be sorry now, if any teachers actually did quit.
I’m just sayin’ . . .

UPS workers approve new labor contract with big raises
These UPS lay offs have put hundreds of family’s at a loss. Children, men, and women suffering from the corporation who chose to bring on THOUSANDS of people for peak season. People who quit good jobs to work for this company who were then laid off months later. Bringing on several new employees to lay off double. Management encourages laid off employees to WAIT for their jobs back. Months without work. I have heard rumors it was for a large bonus for the corporation. Can’t be sure but there’s very little information from higher ups and no help from an organization whose supposed to care for their employees.
I see with the pandemic UPS hired lot of people that has never worked in a union before and don't know nothing about seniority, seniority is king around here! I see multiple posts about drivers being laid off when in reality you're guaranteed your 8 hrs by working inside your hub. If you're refusing to work preload or load in the hub and demand your 8hrs that's on you, you're not laid off.
Theyre also preparing for the new contract negotiations. Theyre playing their money game. Saying there is no work when there clearly is.
Quick question if ups ever does a massive layoff, it’s all seniority based right they have to start with the lowest part time seniority and work there way up till numbers are meet and once they are able to rehire they have to offer those who were laid off there job back first?
Yes it’s seniority based. Yes they start with the lowest and work their way up. Once the work comes back they work from the top down. So the bottom person is the first to be laid off and the last to come back.

Does anyone know if the 20k layoffs are additional layoffs or did the 20k layoffs already happen? At my hub we’re short staffed so if they were to have more layoffs (we had them in early march.) idk how many ppl they’ll let go. For context I’m in Los Angeles. I know geography is important when talking about layoffs.
We are recording an episode tonight and will be talking about this “20k layoff 73 centers closing” news. We are trying to gather information from the UPSers Reddit community here. Can everyone who knows ANYTHING about this reply here. We are looking for any info about how do we know if my job is safe to what locations will be closing. Thank you everyone.
I keep seeing a ton of people mentioning this peak is so light and we are barely working just wait till January. I just been hearing a lot of people worried about the lay offs to come next year. Can’t drivers just bump into the building to get hours or collect unemployment? What’s there to be worried about? Anyone else hearing this often as well?
Just basically that. 40k layoffs, yet you need a shit ton of seasonal employees, yet full timers are still working over 8 hours a day and even a 6th day. All that overtime money spent instead of just having a few extra drivers. It’s quite clear they have zero idea how to balance workload to work force needed to be efficient.
