r/sysadmin on Reddit: How do you reinstall the Microsoft Store app if it was removed via PowerShell on Windows 10 Pro?
January 7, 2021 -

Back when my organization moved to Windows 10, someone in IT ran a PowerShell script to uninstall all the bundled Microsoft Store apps (Candy Crush, etc). The script was run as a local admin on all machines after initially installing Windows 10.

All was fine and good since everything is done on a remote session anyway.

Fast forward a couple years...

I have one machine from this time which has user data on the local machine rather than on the remote desktop (c-level manager) but I noticed that all of the seemingly built-in apps (Windows Calculator) are missing and traced it back to running this script. The problem is, the powershell script also uninstalls the Microsoft Store App and the user wants to install an app from there.

Short of re-imaging the machine, is there a way to reinstall the Microsoft Store app? The troubleshooters from MS TechNet don't seem to work for this situation.

This is the PowerShell script that was used to remove it and all of the store apps:

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online
Get-AppXPackage | Remove-AppxPackage

Tl;dr: How does one install the Microsoft Store if it's been previously removed via PowerShell?

r/techsupport on Reddit: Microsoft Store is Removed. How Can I Reinstall It?
February 14, 2023 -

Hello. Today I had my computer formatted and installed Windows 10 Pro. The version is 10.0.10586. The Microsoft Store didn't open, I got a screen saying "try that again". I tried to solve this problem, I tried a few solutions and then I typed the following command into the command line and hit enter:

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted -Command "& {$manifest = (Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.WindowsStore).InstallLocation + '\AppxManifest.xml' ; Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $manifest}"

After doing so, the Microsoft Store was removed. I tried to install it again but I couldn't. Help me.

Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type "cmd" and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open an elevated Command Prompt. In the Command Prompt, type the following command and press Enter: Get-AppxPackage WindowsStore -allusers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"} This command will reinstall the Microsoft Store app on your system. Once the command has completed, close the Command Prompt and try opening the Microsoft Store again. If the store still won't open, try running the Windows Store Apps Troubleshooter. To do this, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Store Apps > Run the troubleshooter. If the troubleshooter doesn't resolve the issue, you can try resetting the Microsoft Store app. To do this, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Microsoft Store > Advanced options > Reset. If none of these solutions work, you can try reinstalling Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool or a Windows 10 installation disk. Make sure to back up your important files and data before doing so. Note: It's important to be careful when using PowerShell commands, as they can have unintended consequences if entered incorrectly. Make sure to double-check the command before entering it into the Command Prompt.

To reinstall Store, you can use one of these methods:

Option 1

Please try "Method 2" (downloading the Store Appx offline installer) in the following article:

  • Reinstall Microsoft Store in Windows 10/11

After downloading the Msixbundle and Appx packages, you can double-click to install them. Install the Appx (dependency packages) first, then run the Msixbundle file. If you can't install the packages interactively, you can install them using the Add-AppxPackage PowerShell command.

Option 2

Open an Admin Command Prompt and type:

  • winget install 9WZDNCRFJBMP

(9WZDNCRFJBMP is the SKU ID for the Microsoft Store app.)

Option 3

  • Install the Xbox app by downloading the .msi from Xbox App for Windows PC.
  • Open the Xbox App.
  • Open Settings.
  • Click on the General settings tab (left second tab on the list)
  • In the upper right of the screen, there will be a list of system bundles that are missing. Click install on all of them.
  • After installing the bundles, close the Xbox app.

Hello! My name is Mostafa; I will assist you today.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Wait for some more time, around 30 minutes to an hour, to see if the process does not complete the try steps below:

  3. Type the following command and press Enter:

sfc /scannow

  1. Then type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and press Enter.
  2. Wait for the scan to complete and restart your computer.
  3. Try running the following command in PowerShell as an administrator to reset the Microsoft Store cache and see if it helps: wsreset.exe then type same command to reinstall MS store: Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.WindowsStore | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}
  4. Try manually resetting the Microsoft Store using the built-in Windows Settings.

Thank you.

You have a few options here.

  1. See if you have the Xbox app. If so, launch it, go through the initial set up or whatnot. Once all the way in, it might provide you a list of items with a yellow warning indicating issue with them. It might also provide you an installation option to install it. See if Store app is one of them. If so, you should be able to install it from there.
  2. Go to Start > All apps, locate Powershell, right click and "run as admin". Run this command:

Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

  1. If the computer was just set up out of box, you can also consider a factory reset to start over. Hold down Shift key while you choose Windows restart, then go to Troubleshoot > REset this PC.
  2. Repair install is another option. To perform a repair istallation of Windows 11 using the Windows Media Creation Tool:

The following steps should be done on a working Windows computer:

Download the Windows Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's official website. https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/win... click on the "download now" button under "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

Run the tool and select "Create installation media for another PC."

Choose "USB flash drive" as the media to use for the installation and select "Next."

Connect a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space to your computer.

Select the USB flash drive you want to use, and then select "Next."

The tool will then download the required files and create the installation media.

=====================================================

Now these steps will  be done on your problematic computer:

Go to the USB drive via File Explorer, locate and run the Setup.exe file. Ideally, you should disconnect all USB and Bluetooth devices other than mouse and keyboard. Disable any 3rd party antivirus program. Disconnect the internet.

Once you run the Setup.exe file, choose the Install option, and the choose the option that keeps your files and apps.

Hello, this is Emily.

Is this a brand new computer (no former user) or a refurbished/used computer? Just want to make sure if it might be due to group policy issue, especially if previous owner is a business.

Also, can you please type winver in the search on the taskbar and hit enter, when launched, share a screenshot please?

Thanks!

        Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$ ($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml"}

  • Restart your PC and check if the apps are working properly.

I appreciate that mistakes can be made, and please do correct me if I'm wrong, but surely as a Microsoft Community Support Specialist you should realise that this PowerShell is not correct? If you run this, you will receive the following:

This is because you have included an unnecessary space after -Register. For your second example, this should read as:

Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml"}

Running this will actually result in app deployments rather than a screen full of red stating that the file location does not exist - in this case, the only failures should come from resources that are being used by currently open apps:

Hope that helps.

Hi Albert,

Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your Windows 10 installation. It sounds like you have accidentally removed some essential apps and components from your system. Don't worry, I will try to help you restore them.

  • Method 1: Use the Settings app to reset the Microsoft Store app. This will also reinstall the app and fix any issues with it.
    • On Windows 10, navigate to Settings app > Apps > Apps & features.
    • Locate the Microsoft Store entry and click on it to reveal the Advanced options link. Click the Advanced options link.
    • In the Reset section, click the Reset button. This will reinstall the app and clear its data.
  • Method 2: Use PowerShell to reinstall the Microsoft Store app and other built-in apps. This will register the apps again on your system and restore their functionality.
    • Open PowerShell as administrator. You can do so by searching for PowerShell, right-clicking on Windows PowerShell in search results, and then clicking the Run as administrator option.
    • To reinstall the Microsoft Store app only, copy and paste the following command at the PowerShell window and press the Enter key.
        Get-AppXPackage *WindowsStore* -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$ ($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml"}

    • To reinstall all built-in apps, copy and paste the following command at the PowerShell window and press the Enter key.
        Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$ ($_.InstallLocation)\\AppXManifest.xml"}

    • Restart your PC and check if the apps are working properly.
  • Method 3: Perform a repair install of Windows 10 with an in-place upgrade. This will repair broken system files while preserving your personal files, settings, and installed applications. How to perform an In-place Upgrade with Windows 10 Step-by-Step Guide - Microsoft Community

Disclaimer: Please ensure that you backup any important data, including Documents, Pictures, Videos, and more.

I hope these methods help you restore your Microsoft Store and other default apps on Windows 10. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

Your Sincerely
