January 21, 2024The casting of Richard Harris, was it a smart move, considering Harris's old age?
Harris wasn't that old, he was 72 when he died. He was unlucky because he died from cancer, which can be quite unexpected and kill you at every age. To put things into perspective Maggie Smith was only 4 years younger than Harris. However I do believe that when casting older characters for project like this series, where you have to act for something like 10 years, it's better to err on the side of caution and cast a younger actor, making them look older with make up. Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Michael Gambon as Dumbledore were both in their 60s. I think Ian McKellen was 60 when he started filming. That's like the same age of Brad Pitt. More on reddit.com

Joaquin Phoenix in this scene, (starts at 1:21), when without even opening his fucking mouth, he delivers one of the most intense scenes I have ever seen.
After saying to Maximus "Take my hand, I only offer it once", and Maximus walks away from him, his eyes go absolutely livid, and he turns around to Quintus and gives him a bone-chilling look, basically telling him without a single word to kill Maximus, then he slowly turns around and now we see his eyes with pure satisfaction as he first experiences the new unlimited power he holds as emperor. Then his sister walks over and slaps the shit out of him, and when he turns his head back to her, his eyes go pure evil, and convey to her that if she ever even thinks about disrespecting him again or not submitting to his new authority as emperor, things will not be pleasant for her. Like at all. We see that this guy is a complete monster without him even talking or doing anything else. He is basically just standing there.
What a performance. Can't believe he didn't get the Oscar. The movie obviously deserved all the other accolades it got, but he carried the movie.
