Just do the MOOC Java Programming followed by writing some applications to gain some real world experience, followed by: "Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick and Kevin Wayne - Princeton University Coursera course: Part I Part II Coursebook Algorithms 4th Edition And you're good to go. What type of backend work do you want to do? Plenty of people say Java is dated but it’s still a workhorse, if highest pay isn’t a concern but WLB is, Java shops are not the worst places to work.

If you want to bump against modern stacks I’d wager JS is the way to go.
