For something like this don't worry about the shield(s) until you have to. What I mean is that generally the shield isn't going to make or break your connection. I'm sure there's someone here who works in a steel mill with drives near an induction furnace supply or something very noisy that will bark about that statement but I can visualize your pile of cables and have known this pain before...keep it simple for now. Get 3 terminal blocks (optional), a multimeter, and 2 scraps of cable with the appropriate connectors on the end. You need to identify: PC Side - 2, 3, & 5...Drive Side - 1, 2, & 3. Write down the colors. Connect the following together: (PC side -> Drive Side) 5->3, 2->2, 3->1. Good luck. More on reddit.com

I would recommend picking up a Raspberry Pi (any model with ethernet and USB will do, installing raspbian lite along with NUT (Network UPS Tool). Set the Raspberry Pi as the server end and connect the UPS to the Raspberry Pi via USB. Then set up the NUT client on any computer you have connected to the UPS. When the UPS detexts a loss of wall power it will send a signal to the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi will then send a shutdown signal to all the computers that are running the client service. I have some problems with an Indramat drive amplifier and trying to upload the .PAR files to the drive. It seems i need to use an RS232 connection (with some Win 95 era software) in order to upload the file.

Can you decipher this wiring diagram for me. Is this saying there should be 2 layers of shield on the cable, the inner layer being the 0V?

Not for nothing, but couldn't you just use a USB-RS232 adapter, and make a breakout using whatever connecter is on the end? (Likely RJ-11)
