I'd say her memory is still pretty correct. During the day, that is the only area I try to avoid. At night however, Union Square as a whole can get a bit seedy and parts of SOMA. But there are also hidden gems in those areas, so don't be completely afraid of them! Maybe you just don't park there Answer from RelleH16 on reddit.com

r/SanFranciscoSecrets on Reddit: If we're going... to San Francisco. Areas to avoid?
June 12, 2023 -

Hello San Fran locals... I'll be visiting your fine city for the first time (in 3 weeks over 4th of July) with a partner who has been once but 20 years ago.

She remembers Tenderloin being a rough area with lots of aggressive homeless/pan handlers/sketchy types. What are the current areas of San Fran to avoid while walking around looking like tourists?

Also any tips or hidden gems or events around July 1-5 we can check out?

Best place to watch fireworks?

August 12, 2024 - Fast forward 20 years and Bernal ... in San Francisco. It has a Bohemian feel, with a tightly knit, community-centric vibe. Bernal Heights is in Tier 3 because Bernal should be broken up into four different neighborhoods due to its walkability. Some areas are walkable, while others are not. Some feature great sun and weather, while others are windy. Some have freeway views, while others do not. Also, some of Bernal’s streets are so narrow that I cross my fingers and toes to avoid a fender-bender ...

What is your favorite neighborhood in San Francisco and why?
Love my current neighborhood, the Glen Park / Noe / Mission border. Weather, awesome walkability, easy to get on the J… But special shout out to my old neighborhood, the Excelsior and Mission Terrace. Working class and funky, and man at dinner time the smell of every cuisine being cooked mixed together. More on reddit.com

July 18, 2025 - San Francisco... ... Street parking can be hard to find and either metered or permitted. I personally hate when you see a spot that will say something like “No parking, 2nd & 4th Thursday”. I always have to check a calendar. Parking garages can be easier, but are pricey. The latest strategy by SF neighborhoods to avoid development? Be ‘historic’
June 30, 2025 - The pursuit of a “historic” designation is an increasingly popular tactic in San Francisco and other California cities. Residents of St. Francis Wood successfully petitioned the state for historic status (opens in new tab) in 2022, while a proposal submitted in 2024 by a coalition of North Beach residents is in the final stage of review at the State Historical Resources Commission. Wealthy neighborhoods in San Mateo (opens in new tab), Palo Alto (opens in new tab), and Pasadena (opens in new tab) have taken similar steps in recent years in attempts at avoiding new development.

San Francisco Crime Map - GIS Geography
June 14, 2024 - Situated in the southeastern part of San Francisco, Bayview-Hunters Point has experienced crime issues. Poverty, gang activity, and violent incidents are some of the big ones. Crime and poverty remain elevated in Bayview-Hunters Point. Visitors and residents should be cautious of this area especially at night. I especially don’t recommend going for a casual stroll here. Most of the Western Addition is safe. However, this neighborhood is encountering higher crime rates.
