The Semi-Formal Wedding Dress Code, Decoded
November 13, 2025 - Semi-formal and cocktail dress codes are relatively similar, but they're not the same. You can think of semi-formal wedding attire as a slightly toned-down version of cocktail attire. These two dress codes overlap in the sense that they're both less formal than black-tie attire and allow for more flexibility in color and style.

What on earth is a “semi-formal” dress code for a 21st backyard party??
Don't wear a suit. Blazer and chinos and a collared shirt will be the formal end of semi formal for a 21st backyard party. Blazer and jeans or chinos and a light jacket fine too. You'd probably get away with jeans and an Oxford shirt too but that would be lower end I think keep in mind this is a 21st and 50% of the guys there will come in a tshirt and shorts so you're probably fine as long as you wear a collared shirt lol More on reddit.com
What exactly is "semi-formal"?
It's a term that's overused enough that you have to figure it out from the context of the situation or event. In this context, it almost certainly means "dress up, but not like a suit, man". Assuming you're young, you'll probably be fine with with a button-up tucked into chinos and some dress shoes. More on reddit.com

I think I’m stressing out the dumbest little thing but I just need some thoughts. I’m planning to put semi-formal attire on my invitations. To me it means for men: slacks, nice button up shirt and tie or a suit and for women: a nice dress long or short.
What are others thoughts? I do also have a website on the Knot and was thinking of putting more detail on there for my definition of semi-formal mostly because my invitation will look way too crowded with these details.

Keep in mind this will vary by your area and circles, so you will get different answers since this sub is global. In mine semi formal and cocktail are synonymous and are cocktail dresses (any length), dressy jumpsuits, and suits (ties optional). Slacks and a button up would be a Sunday best or dressy casual dress code to me.

August 20, 2025 - The clues about what this dress code calls for lie in its name. Instead, semi-formal attire lies between these two extremes.

March 19, 2024 - If you like wearing suits or blazers, add a nice button-down dress shirt, dark socks, and dress shoes, and wear with the matching suit pants/skirt or something in a coordinating color. When in doubt about a tie, wear it (and feel free to take it off if yours is the only one in the room). Go with minimalism and traditional tailoring, darker colors, and matching accessories—a black belt with black shoes. Avoid brightly colored socks, sneakers, and t-shirts. Aim for an ensemble that makes you comfortable. If you’re not used to semi-formal clothing, practice wearing your outfit ahead of the event.
