Is it a bad idea to use sharkbite valves when replacing the tub and shower manifold? I keep getting conflicting reports from people and from online. One friend who does remodeling suggested that it’s perfectly fine to use them, while another has said it is better to sweat the pipes. I also see both opinions when researching online.

I’d recommend sweating in copper or going PEX if it’s a closed wall and copper pipe you’re attaching them to. When you cut or abrade the end of the pipe to a shark bite it leaves small sharp edges that can nick the O-ring inside the shark bite. It may not leak at install but over time the water pressure can turn this little nick into a leak. If there’s easy access to them yeah they’re great, just pricey, but I wouldn’t feel confident closing them off.
