March 19, 2025 - The main branch, Ladd Canyon, is just over 3 miles (4.8 km) long. Its stream arises on the east flank of Pleasants Peak at about 3,590 feet (1,090 m) and flows southwest into the main stem at about 1,178 feet (359 m) near Silverado. They are part of the Santa Ana River watershed. A hiking trail/fire road runs the entire length of the canyon.

The starting point for the Silverado Canyon Motorway Trail can be found near the Maple Springs Trailhead on Maple Springs Road.

This is a strenuous trail to Santiago Peak that starts on Maple Springs Road but transitions to trail and road a couple times before the last fire road walk up to Santiago Peak. There's an easy side trip to Modjeska Peak for those who wan to back both peaks which comprise Orange Counties famous Saddleback Mountain. The total mileage is 14 miles made longer (17 miles) if you have to part at the Maple Springs Visitor Center. The map here shows the incorrect starting point far down Silverado Road before the gate.

Silverado Trail starts from Maple Springs Road just a short distance east of the parking area. The trail steadily climbs up the ridge between Silverado and Ladd Canyons via a series of switchbacks that ease the grade of the climb significantly.

A short climb takes you to a large, flat area, then it's all downhill for three miles. The Motorway switchbacks its way down the mountain along a skinny, loose, shale covered trail, ending at the Maple Springs Rd (paved section) just up from the Visitor Center off Silverado Canyon Rd.

Finally, turn left onto Silverado Canyon Road. Continue for another 3 miles to the locked gate at the end of Silverado Canyon Road. Also nearby: Blackstar Canyon, Holy Jim Trail and the San Juan Loop. Check out the map below if you want to turn this into an overnight trip.

Only 1 narrow road leads in and out of Silverado Canyon along its 6 mile stretch with a speed limit of 25 MPH. The scenic road dead ends at a thick steel gate managed by The Forest Service, at times, the gate is open which is called Maple Springs Truck Trail and turns into a dirt road that will take you all the way up to Santiago Peak which is the highest point in Orange County at 5,689 ft.
