You can make a fire relatively smokeless by providing sufficient airflow to it. A "smokeless" firepit like the solo stove has the fuel placed on a slightly raised area, contained by a metal shield. This “smokeless” fire pit uses convection currents to pull smoke down and up again where it is actually burned again.
They do claim this, but it's not really what's going on. What they actually do is use convection to blow fresh air right where it's most useful. The key is that material can only burn in the presence of oxygen, because fire is a chemical reaction where carbon leaves whatever molecule it's bound up with and instead joins with oxygen to make CO2. These stoves pull in extra fresh air from the ground through the holes at the bottom. This air is directed to both the base of the fire, and also towards top (the inner holes on top).
