SUBTLE Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster
5 days ago - So what is that pesky "b" doing there anyway? Is that sub at the beginning of the word related to the sub in submarine and subterranean? Yes, it is. Subtle comes ultimately from a Latin pair: the prefix sub-, meaning "under," and tela, meaning "web." The two were joined in Latin subtilis, meaning "finely woven."

Subtle - Definition, Meaning & Synonyms | Vocabulary.com
Subtle is used for things that are hard to describe because of their complexity or delicacy: a way of thinking, arguing, or creating a work of art. The word is pronounced like "suttle" and it was originally spelled that way when it was borrowed from Old French, but the b got imported to make the word look more like its ultimate source, the Latin adjective subtilis.

What is the meaning of 'subtle'?
Subtle (the "b" is silent, by the way) means slight or barely noticeable. For instance, if you move something subtly, you move it only a little bit. If something is subtly different, it's only a little different, in a way that is hard to notice. Ever go into a room and you know something is different but you're not sure what? Someone has made a subtle change to the room. They didn't paint it, they didn't redecorate it - those are big changes. A subtle change might be moving a photograph from a table to a shelf. A subtle smile would be a very small smile. You could also say that a person is subtle, which would probably mean that they think/behave in a way that is difficult to understand, maybe because they have goals that you are unaware of. This is not a common use of the word though, although you might see it in literature. More on reddit.com

r/EnglishLearning on Reddit: What is the meaning of the word subtle?
February 5, 2025 -

In Google, the meaning of the word subtle is given as follows (together with other meanings):

(especially of a change or distinction) so delicate or precise as to be difficult to analyse or describe.

However, I still don't find clarity about this word. I have seen this word used in a few books but I feel that the meanings given in Google doesn't match the word in the books.

Example of a sentence:

"However, the consequences of poor self-esteem are subtler."

I just find it difficult to grasp the meaning of this word.

Can you explain the meaning of the word subtle in layman terms?

Thank you.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your comments.
