December 16, 2024 - According to Harris Tweed, “Tweed is a natural fibre textile, woven with a soft, open weave and made from wool. The word Tweed derives from the Scots word Tweel or twill, a type of weave common to the cloth.” Tweed was originally woven in the 1700s to help Scottish farmers endure harsh winters and didn’t feature the colourful and intricate designs it’s now known for. Silk is considered one of the most luxurious materials on the planet, first discovered in China by the wife of Emperor Xi Ling-Shi in 6000BC when she noticed that threads were attached to the worms eating the leaves of damaged mulberry trees.

Was wondering if anyone knows of any clothing that is as soft as things like women's seamless underwear and or some fuzzy winter socks. I'm a man so the underwear is less of an option than the socks. If you guys have any suggestions let me know!

Are you looking because you want to purchase clothing with soft material, or because you want to make your own clothes?? Usually softness can be any number of different materials in fabric, so it's a bit hard to say that, like, every nylon is soft. It could be but also not sometimes. Anyways nylon, cotton, and bamboo are soft, and some fleece microfibers. Look for brushed cotton as well. Then on the heavier/winter end, many animal derived knits (small gauge, meaning really thin fibers knit closely together) are really soft, like alpaca, cashmere, angora, wool, merino. But if you're just looking to buy ready to wear items, use soft as a search term and read product reviews.

cotton is incredibly versatile (most fibres are). it can make everything from stiff, scratchy canvas, to thick denim, to light and soft cotton lawn, to stretchy cotton jersey. simply knowing the fibre a fabric is made of is not enough to say what the fabric will be like to wear. some cottons make wonderful, soft tops and others make great stiff work trousers and others are great for quilts and others still make covers for outdoor furniture. i would recommend reading a little about different types of fabric to learn how the fibre (e.g. cotton, linen, silk, wool, viscose, polyester) is turned into cloth and what each type is suitable for. you'll find that both the method used for turning spun thread into fabric (weaving or knitting, and different methods for each) and the weight/thickness of the thread affects what the fabric is suitable for. e.g. a cotton poplin is typically great for dress shirts, a brushed cotton makes a flannel pajamas, a mid-weight cotton twill makes a pair of chinos, a cotton lawn makes a light, airy blouse, a cotton jersey makes a t-shirt, and a cotton velvet makes a nice wintery party dress.

It depends on what you're looking for. If soft means stretchy and comfy to you, you're looking for a knit fabric, like jersey. Jersey comes in many different fiber blends, but the most common one is probably a cotton/spandex blend. Woven fabrics also come in a variety of blends, but if you want something soft and comfy, flannel or any brushed fabric might be what you're looking for. They won't be stretchy, though. I sew with knits quite a lot, and I love them for comfy tops and dresses. I also love woven fabrics for shirts, blouses and more formal or structured dresses. Both are good, just for different things. When choosing your fabric, keep a couple of things in mind: Cotton is a fiber, and it can be made into both a woven and a knit fabric. The same goes for all other kinds of fibers, like wool, linen and polyester. A woven fabric won't be stretchy, and, depending on the weave, can be either flowy or a bit more structured. A knit fabric is stretchy, with a softer feel than most wovens. But sewing with a knit can be a bit tricky, as another comment points out. If you're using a pre-made pattern, most will specify whether to use a woven or a knit when sewing the pattern.
