Can I talk you out of the L shape? It’s almost never the answer. And as far as wood goes, you probably aren’t going to find anything made of solid walnut unless you commission a carpenter to make something custom, which will cost serious money. Most solid wood desks are made of pine in the US or parawood in Asia. Both are excellent woods that take stain beautifully with a wide variety of options. The only major vendor near me that sells solid wood furniture is gothic cabinet craft . The stuff they make themselves is all made in USA. The other stuff is made overseas, but still hardwood and well made. They also make custom furniture if you really have your heart set on an L shape, but it will definitely cost you and I’m not sure how that process works if you can’t go to a store in person (I think they’re all in the metro NY area). Really building it yourself is the best way to go to get exactly what you want. Or do what I did and hunt craigslist for office surplus desks. I ended up picking up a commercial desk from a church on craigslist for $50, it's all steel with a formica top, weighs like 300-400lbs. I ended up replacing the steel backing with IKEA legs. I build this desk for a client a few weeks ago and it's predominantly maple plywood. The only parts that are solid maple are the leg, the carcass face frames, and the drawer rails and stiles. With edge banding or hardwood strips, plywood can be made to look like solid hardwood. There is a lot of nice furniture out there made from plywood. I would not recommend going to a big box store to get it, though. Find a good lumber yard that specializes in hardwood. You will find all kinds of plywood with nice veneer. More on reddit.com
