May 18, 2024Heat Deflector with Surround?
I have a Yukon and have the surround and heat deflector. I used the heat deflector without the surround for about two months waiting for it to arrive after ordering. I too had heard negative things about using both simultaneously. One reviewer even mentioned removing the fabric to let the heat flow better, lol ok. But really, do you think Solo Stove would have designed the surround with such a big flaw and not remediate it if it were true (like they did with the originally short heat deflector legs)? Maybe, but they seem responsive to feedback if it’s valid. My wife and I haven’t noticed a difference in heat output with or without the surround. The heat isn’t getting trapped within the fabric. I have tested this by sticking my hand between the fabric and the fire pit and the air was basically the same as the ambient outside temperature. There is plenty of space for the heat to fall down in there but it didn’t seem to be flowing that direction. I think it’s a wider spread than people think and it’s going over the surround entirely and being pushed out to sitting positions. More on reddit.com

Evening mate from the UK. Tried the heat deflector while camping this weekend after receiving it on Thursday gone.
Thoughts as follows
Stuck it on after burning and getting up to temp. Did nothing, honestly thought I’d wasted my money.
About an hour later I put enough wood on to see flames roaring. Heat was excellent around fire. Legs almost too toasty which was excellent. Torso also hot. Lovely. Going to keep it.
To answer your questions,
You can toast marshmallows below the heat deflector itself, the legs on the units bought through solo are the larger ones than originally came with the deflector when it first launched, which means you can comfortably place chopped wooden pieces in without a problem. Obviously if the pieces are massive you’re going to have a problem.
Not sure what others think but if I had my way with the bonfire again I’d have worn gloves when setting up and before burning for the first time to stop my fingers from creating the blue effect probably from the oils reacting. Was more careful with the deflector and it still looks perfect. I washed it with water the next day as it was sooty underneath and it came up great.
Finally, it’s hot as balls once on so if for any reason you want to move it afterwards then make sure you wear fire resistant gloves.
