What’s the best free beginner course for learning SQL?
https://sqlbolt.com is great to get acquainted with the basic syntax. Don't make it a challenge though. If you get stuck just check the answer, fill in the answer (muscle memory) and come back later to see if you can remember it. The reason you should be rushing through this fast without any concern whether you understand it or not is because you'll learn SQL faster if you learn it top-down. Which means exploring the problem first, establishing how it needs to be broken down, and then finally at the end enter the syntax. And that's when job interview problems (start anywhere on Youtube) are awesome, they're all derived from real world databases. They all will walk you through this process the right way. People who start trying to get a perfect syntax first will be treading water for a long time before they get to chew on what makes SQL so satisfying to work it. That's what I did and I wish someone had told me this. Instead I had SQL for Dummies starting me out on database sanitation... More on reddit.com

How to learn SQL in-depth
O'Reilly media has several books on SQL optimization. https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/sql-tuning/0596005733/ https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/sql-performance-tuning/0201791692/ https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/introduction-to-sql/9781484251447/ https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/sql-server-query/9781803242620/ And for a Data Engineer that's important. Still, and this may be personal preference, it's the hard job interview questions that feel more 'in depth' to me than tweaking the performance itself. But maybe that's coming from an analyst perspective. More on reddit.com

Any free courses? I want to learn more.
You can take your time and get this done in about a few days to a week easily. It’s very to the point, which I appreciated. https://sqlbolt.com Also, download https://sqlitestudio.pl and open it up. Create a database, create a table, and import a CSV file and play around with the data either as your doing the tutorial or right after. r/SQL on Reddit: How to learn SQL in-depth
March 1, 2023 -

Hi everyone. I'm a data scientist currently and interested in switching to data engineering. The latter requires better SQL knowledge. I already know basic SQL, can solve easy and intermediate questions on hackerrank, but i want to go deeper. I want to understand how the particular query works, what happens in background, how SQL parses queries and how to write more optimal SQL. I think here I need some resources teaching theoretical, fundamental knowledge, not only practicing on Hackerrank or DataLemur. Any advice, book, course, docs, etc will be appreciated.

P.S. As for SQL variant, I'm going to use Oracle, but I think it's not that important in my situation, as I look for fundamental SQL knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong).

r/SQL on Reddit: Can someone recommend a tutorial for working with SQL?
January 25, 2024 -

I just got hired as a business analyst and I'm expected to be able to access the databases and pull data as needed. Tomorrow is my first day.

My employer knows I don't know SQL well, I used it a few years ago for a single class, but I'm familiar with Python, R, and a little bit of experience in other code. I started the SQL lessons on W3 but if anyone can recommend one specifically for someone working alongside SQL at work, that would be really helpful.

I'm not a database architect or a programmer, just need to be able to work with the tools available for now.
