r/rstats on Reddit: How to write a standardization formula?
April 8, 2021 -

I'm trying to replicate a study in which they standardized an estimate as follows:

The standardization was accomplished by subtracting the mean of the distribution from each value and dividing by the standard deviation of the distribution.

How to create a formula/function?

I tried to do general normalization as follows, but I couldn't understand the above to change my code

normalize <- function(x) {
  return(((x - min(x,na.rm = T)) / (max(x,na.rm = T) - min(x,na.rm = T)))*100)
}

Understanding Standard Normal Distribution – 365 Data Science
September 19, 2025 - Say the mean and the variance of a variable are mu and sigma squared respectively. Standardization is the process of transforming a variable to one with a mean of 0 and a standard deviation of 1. You can see how everything is denoted below along with the formula that allows us to standardize a distribution.

One way to obtain a common scale is to standardize the variables by number of standard deviations from the mean. The goal is to convert a variable \(X\) into a variable \(Z\) in standard units. You do this by subtracting the mean \(\bar{x}\) from every value \(x_i\), and then divide by the standard deviation \(s\). The conversion formula is:
