I want to upgrade to be able to do some mid-level gaming. Staples has a really good deal on an HP right now (i5 processor, 12gb memory, 256 gb ram); are they okay to buy from? I think of them more as an office supplies/furniture store.

12 GB RAM is a very unusual amount, probably it's 16 and they allocate 4 GB to the iGPU. Talking about the iGPU (the Intel UHD Graphics 730) - this is not suitable for mid-level gaming. You need to buy a videocard for that, that'll cost you at least $100 for an old second hand, or $300 for a new one (this will be on the lower end of 'mid-level gaming')

He went on this whole spiel about how windows security is garbage and "PCs come barebones like Spirit Flights" meaning you just get the PC and not the software. It's a $350 PC and he was trying to sell me on their $300 Total Protection Plan where "they manage the security for you", which sounds terrible. But he said he didn't know when the last time was when someone came in and didn't get a protection plan. I use Windows Security on my $2k gaming PC, doesn't everyone else? I don't know what kind of comission they make but either its a shit ton or I am totally wrong. I told him I see mcaffee as preinstalled junk on PCs that just shows you ads to buy it every second. Am I not wrong?

Technically, the answer is yes. There is still a component install service that we can use, but the ability of the store staff to actually perform the service is going to entirely depend on the store. Staples doesn't hire actual technicians for the Tech Services roles anymore. They are just salespeople, and if they happen to know how to do hardware work on a computer, more power to them. You'd have better luck taking the machine to a Best Buy, or better yet Micro Center, if you have one reasonably close by. Otherwise, find a friend who is capable and pay them to do it, or find some YouTube videos and try it yourself.
