Im going to a wedding next month in Central Washington. Temperatures are often 90’s plus. It’s an outdoor wedding, in the afternoon. They’ve asked for black tie attire but after talking with the family, I’m not convinced they know what black tie means. (Maybe I don’t).
My impression is it means black tuxedo and black tie for men. It’s my family and I know no one will be getting tuxedos just to attend the wedding.
My question is this, how serious do I need to take the attire request? Do I show up in a tux? Or a black (too damn hot) suit?
Or would I be ok wearing a tan wool/linen suit with a silk shirt, and loafers?

Black tie means tux! However, it doesn’t always have to be black. For an outdoor wedding in eastern wa I would go with a white/off white linen tuxedo 2 piece.

That doesn’t adhere to “black tie” as a dress code, but nor does it sound like they know what they are talking about. If you think that that fits with what everyone else will be wearing, despite how it’s described, I’d send a picture of it to someone from the family and ask if that is what they mean.

Black tie optional means formal dress code, but if you want to, you can dress for black tie, which would be a tuxedo for men and a full length gown for women. Formal can be a full length dress/gown or a fancy cocktail dress. Formal or Black-Tie Optional As the wording here suggests, this dress code is slightly less formal than a black-tie wedding. So, a tuxedo isn't required, but can still be worn if preferred. If opting for a suit, however, a formal dark suit, white shirt, and a conservative tie are acceptable. For women, the outfit choices remain the same: a floor-length gown, a fancy cocktail dress, or a dressy pantsuit. In fact, there isn't much of a difference between black-tie and black-tie optional, although Mae says it's more acceptable to wear a dress that shows the ankles (which is not true of a black-tie dress code). It’s pretty dressed up, but doesn’t require men to wear tuxes (more of a wear em if you got em), so this is usually went you want to wear your nicest stuff. Lingerie dresses, more elegant and sophisticated, more the Oscars less the Grammys if that makes sense. I also think if good to know your crowd and venue, if someone is saying black tie optional, but you know they’re doing bbq in a barn and serving drinks in mason jars, then someone was just having fun with names and you can definitely dress down. But country club or downtown museum style spaces in the evening, yeah, dress to the 9’s!
