December 12, 2024 - The fall of the Assad government in Syria took almost everybody by surprise and has created uncertainty for competing foreign interests that had established lines of control most assumed were frozen in the region. Launched barely two weeks ago, the operation by opposition militias had speedy success in achieving its initial goal — seizing Syria’s second city, Aleppo. From there, in a little more than a week, the rebel alliance reached Damascus and on Sunday put an end to five decades of Assad family rule. Since a March 2020 ceasefire which froze the last major frontline in Idlib governorate, the country has been de facto partitioned into four main areas controlled by different parties to the conflict: the GoS-controlled area (about two thirds of the country), the northeast controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a territory in northern Syria under control of the Syrian National Army (SNA) and the area in the northwest controlled by the rebel group Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) [Security 2023, 1.1, pp. 16-17]. The map below (Figure 1) outlines the approximate areas of control and influence in the country as of June 2023.

September 21, 2022 - Otherwise, good map of a very complicated war! ... Us influence on syria is quite low now compared to Russian influence only near some oil fields (the cyan region) ... The US occupies a 1/3 of Syria. Strangely, all the places with oil and food. ...
