What’s a BIOS update for a noob

Bios is the software for your motherboard. Sometimes the pre-installed bios is not up to date enough to be able to work with all your parts, so it would need an update before you could use it. Updating a bios before setting up a pc makes it harder to do. You either need to boot up the PC with an older cpu that works with the current bios version and update from there, or some mobo's have a bios flashback function which lets you download the bios update to a usb and plug it in and hit a button to tell the mobo to update off of the usb drive. Not all mobo's can do this.

Microcenter will update your bios with one of their cpu's if you ask. I believe amd will send a cheap cpu to you for a few days so you can update if you bought a new ryzen cpu.

A B450 board with 'MAX' in the name will give the warning on pcpartpicker but will NOT need an update. They are good out of the box. That's a blanket warning for all B450 boards.

Can someone explain BIOS update
Everything gets BIOS / Firmware updates, and everything is susceptible to failing. You could build yourself the most expensive desktop in the land and still have a bad BIOS update brick it. The difference is some desktop boards have multiple BIOS's, so if you brick one then you flip a switch and use the second one. Your phones , routers, TV and almost anything you use electronically gets updates, and those updates could cause that device to stop working if they don't apply properly. Most people will never see a failed BIOS update, or have to deal with a bricked machine, but when it does happen then typically they go looking for someone to blame, and end up here if it's an Alienware machine. If you nervous about the updates then just do them manually, but wait a few weeks until others test them out for you. More on reddit.com

To update your BIOS, follow these general steps:

  1. Check Your Current BIOS Version: Before updating, find out your current BIOS version. You can do this by entering the BIOS setup during boot (usually by pressing a key like F2, F10, or Delete) or by checking in Windows under System Information.
  2. Visit the Manufacturer's Website: Go to the support section of your motherboard or computer manufacturer's website. Look for the latest BIOS update for your specific model.
  3. Download the BIOS Update: Download the BIOS update file. It is usually in a compressed format (like .zip) and may include a README file with instructions.
  4. Prepare a USB Drive: Format a USB flash drive to FAT32 and copy the BIOS update file onto it. Make sure to follow any specific instructions provided by the manufacturer regarding the file structure.
  5. Enter BIOS Setup: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS setup again.
  6. Use the BIOS Update Tool: Look for an option like "EZ Flash" or "M-Flash" in the BIOS menu to update the BIOS. Select the USB drive and the BIOS file you downloaded.
  7. Follow the Instructions: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update. Do not turn off your computer during this process as it can corrupt the BIOS.
  8. Reboot: Once the update is complete, your computer will usually reboot automatically. You may need to enter the BIOS again to adjust settings or confirm the update.
  9. Check for Updates: After the update, check if there are any additional updates or settings you need to configure for optimal performance, especially for gaming.

Make sure to read any specific instructions provided by your manufacturer, as the process can vary depending on the motherboard or system model.
