Our auto insurance (TD) has identified my car (Honda CR-V) as being high risk of theft. They're offering to fully reimburse the installation of anti-theft tracking sensors by a Canadian company called Tag Tracking along with first 5 years of monitoring fee ($399+tax value).
According to TD, the insurance rates are about to go up for high-theft-risk models, so there's something to lose by not taking this offer. On the other hand, they claim the sensors will only be tracked if I report the vehicle missing, so there will allegedly be no privacy violation. After 5 years, I can choose to continue or cancel for free.
On its surface, and assuming Tag Tracking won't engage in illegal tracking, this seems like a great deal. Is there a catch? Have others been offered similar deals? Did you take it?

Yay, I work in insurance so I can give a pretty detailed answer even though I don't work for a company that works for this. Yes this is legit. Aviva and TD are offering this to customers who drive cars that are at a high risk of theft. Other companies are considering it as well. The tags are installed and monitored by a 3rd party company. The tracker can only be used if you consent to it because the vehicle is stolen. They also put RFID tags on the parts in your car that are commonly stolen like the catalytic converter so that they are harder to steal. It's not connected to your car's electrical system. Quebec has even went as far as to mandate that all high-risk cars have these types of anti-theft system. It's a good deal and they are offering it for a reason. Insurance companies don't like paying out claims, believe it or not, so they want to minimize the chances of a loss happening. I'm an underwriter and let me tell you, we're losing LOADS of money because of the sheer number of thefts of a select few models of SUVs and trucks, it's absolutely brutal. To us, $400 is absolutely worth it to reduce the risk of a theft occurring because those are total loss situations. It's a rare win-win scenario for both parties.

I had this exact same message from TD. For $400 you can get TAG installed at any speedy auto Glass, that'll shut them up. And now I'm looking for a new insurer for when mine expires in August. It pissed me off that they couldn't tell me exactly how much my premium would increase, other than "up to $2500, the exact number will be in your renewal paperwork" So yeah. Farewell to my 20+ year loyalty, they just had to keep to increasing a little every year, nickel and diming, this was the last straw.

I'm going through this right now with our new car and TD. Probably gonna get the IGLA installed at Carphonix. It's more expensive than the trackers but I figure if I'm gonna get something then I might as well pay up a bit extra for the preventative measure instead of a tracker that just tells me which boat it's on after it's been stolen.
