How to use tap to pay with my phone?
If tap to pay is accepted, it’s highly likely they’ll accept your Google Pay. Most places have a little sticker for Apple Pay, Google Pay, and then Visa, MasterCard, etc. It works the same as with a physical credit card! Just hold your phone over/tap it onto the card machine. I like to open up the wallet on my phone first before tapping, but I think the devices are actually smart enough that you don’t need to do that. You will possibly need to put in your passcode/authenticate yourself before the payment goes through, so just be ready for that. More on reddit.com

This phone can't be set up to tap to pay
u/zalcso - ... I try to set up my Revolut card in Google Wallet, it gives me this error after the "contacting your bank" step. (Your phone doesn't meet security standards to make contactless payments. It may be rooted or running uncertified software...Is there any workaround without root or any add-on for Pixel 7?... Some apps require that the device passes the Play Integrity API (or the SafetyNet test). See Play Integrity API Checker on the Play store. You could check on the XDA forum: Magisk - The Age of Zygisk. as Magisk is not supported in this sub. You can use the Search this thread feature on XDA. More on reddit.com

ELI5: How does contactless payment with your phone work?
It uses a standard called Near Field Communication (NFC). Your phone has a chip that can send out electromagnetic fields, that the reader can interpret. Your phone stores the credit card information, and then sends out the relevant data when necessary. The reader will then process the payment like normal. Your credit cards that you use tap to pay leverage the exact same tech, it's one and the same. More on reddit.com

How Tap To Pay Works (For Retailers): NFC, Wallets, Setup & Security
October 17, 2025 - Cashiers recognize the wallet tap animation—a subtle glow or checkmark on the customer's phone—and wait for the terminal beep before handing over the bag. This prevents "Did it work?" confusion. You have three paths to accept tap to pay: upgrade to an NFC-enabled terminal ($200–$600), turn your iPhone into a payment terminal with Tap to Pay on iPhone (no extra hardware), or use an external NFC card reader ($50–$300) with your existing device.

CTA lets Android users tap and pay for transit fares in Chicago • NFCW
September 25, 2024 - Passengers on public transportation services in Chicago in the US can now use an Android NFC smartphone to make tap-and-go fare payments by uploading the Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) virtual Ventra transit card to Google Pay. Once they have added a new Ventra card or transferred an existing one to Google Pay, users can pay for their journeys by tapping readers at CTA railway stations and on CTA and Pace suburban buses. “After adding their card to Google Pay, there is no need for riders to unlock their phone; they can simply ‘wake up’ their phone to tap and go with a Ventra card in Google Pay,” the CTA says.
