Has anyone used the Target Red Card, debit version? I'm intrigued by the fact that it's benefit is 5% off at Target, no fees and it's not a credit card since I hate debt. They claim that it is tied to your existing checking, just like your normal debit card. Was thinking of signing up but was wondering if anyone had used it in the past and could give me a quick review/rating? Thanks!

I used to work at target! I had the debit card before I started working there and (knock on wood) never had an issue with it. Before the next bits, I want to state I no longer work for target and the reason this is gonna sound like an ad is cause that’s how we were trained to talk about it to guests 🤣 but I honestly and sincerely use the app and card to get deals. Honestly it’s not bad to have on hand even for small and sporadic purchases. Though it might not be super worth it to most unless you shop there often or have a large purchase planned. It can take up to 4 days for the purchase to come out of your account, so if you had several purchases, that can get annoying. I haven’t had to dispute anything on it so I can’t tell you how that goes. Also when you get a gift card with your purchase, the way the transaction gets debited is weird as it makes it look like you were charged for the gift card, but I assure you you’re not. The way it shows up, for example, say you bought 20 bucks of stuff and got a 5 dollar gift card. The transaction will show up as two debits. One for 15 and one for 5. It totals the 20 you spent but that’s how they keep track of gift cards given out with purchase. I’ve always hated it, but it is what it is. I do recommend downloading the Circle app if you do decide to get it. You can add it to the app so you don’t even have to remember the card to shop. ( So long as that doesn’t make it easy to mindlessly shop of course) And, the most important part, is that you can stack coupons from the app and they have several promotions per sale week that are only available on the app. And if you search an item while in store and it’s cheaper on the app, target will price match to that price. I got a 50 dollar hdmi cord for 15 bucks thanks to that. I know you mostly asked about the debit card but I wanted to add the app info since those two compounded can help find some good deals overall. Mileage may vary based on locations of course, but overall I’ve found that even though it’s only 5 percent off I’d still rather have it and save whatever I can if I’m gonna make the purchase anyway and I’ll just plan for the time it takes for the transactions to come out. Can someone explain this to me like I am a 5 year old? A worker at Target today was telling me that Target offers a DEBIT card as well as their credit card. She said the debit card links to your bank account so it’s basically the same as your regular card, but now you get 5% off and a $50 gift card for signing up. There’s gotta be a catch right? How is Target benefiting from this at all? Am I going to get screwed somehow?

Target benefits because they don't have to pay transaction fees on their own cards. There isn't really any downside except carrying another card around

The Target Red Card debit card is a “debit card” that allows Target to pull money directly from your account without charging them a fee via the ACH network. From a payment standpoint, it’s basically like a digital, reusable check that can only be used at Target. Because it saves Target a large amount of money and increases customer loyalty, they make it so that it’s pretty much nothing but benefit. With that said, there are a few things to know: First, as far as your bank is concerned, it’s no different from writing Target a check every time you use it. That means that it will take a few business days for the purchase to show up on your bank statement, and in the worst case, purchasing something late Friday evening, your transaction likely won’t show up until the following Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Also as a result of the card basically being the digital version of a check, if you don’t have enough money to cover your purchase in your account, the card will not decline, and you’ll instead be faced with a $30 returned payment fee along with whatever fees your bank adds on. It’s basically the same as bouncing a check. But as long as you don’t mind keeping track of your target purchases and knowing that they’re gonna take a few days to go through, and are careful that you don’t spend money you don’t have, then you’re fine and it’s an easy way to save some money.
