r/Windows10 on Reddit: Hello Windows Community :) Is it normal to have so many background processes 2 minutes after startup?
January 29, 2023 - However, I can see 4.4GB of used RAM and 167 processes. A clean installation takes 1.6-1.8GB of RAM, so I suspect there is a lot of bloatware. The usual route is: go to your tray menu and see what lurks there. If there are stuff you don't need - uninstall or disable them from starting up via Task Manager.
Discussions

Task Manager says that there are over 125 background processes running. Is that normal? Is my PC being slowed down from them? I do notice a slight delay between switching tabs/programs.
It is fairly normal to have a lot of processes in task manager these days. The days of lean and mean process number in Windows 7 are gone. Even a clean install will have a lot, but that's fine, it's how the OS was built. You mention delays though, without knowing what your hardware specs are, it'll be hard to tell if there is actually something going on there. Do note that on a fresh install of Windows, there will be a bit more going on in the background like indexing your files and that can affect performance a bit until it's done. More on reddit.com

How do I end all background processes in task manager fast?
useless processes They are not useless. There are system processes, which you DON'T close, and opened software processes, which you also DON'T close because your system uses them in the foreground and background. Windows manages these processes by itself. taking up about 40 percent of my memory I don't know how much RAM your system have but It's not an issue. I have 16GB of RAM with currently two Chrome windows with one using Reddit and the other playing YouTube, Steam in the background alongside 200 other processes. They use 36% of my RAM. Is there a way to keep them closed? Do a clean boot. Don't mess with processes if you don't know what they are doing in the first place. More on reddit.com

My computer has too many background processes and windows processes open. - Internal Hardware
Almost every time when I open task manager, it says 95 background processes and around 109 windows processes are open all the time. My memory usage is always at 45-50% even when I tend not to use anything. Is it normal? I do not know what processes to end as ending wrong processes might cause ... More on bleepingcomputer.com

Does anyone know why there are so many background processes and if I can delete them
Under the "startup" tab, disable anything you don't use much. If it affects things negatively later on, just enable that item again. If you open MsConfig (go to your search bar and type "msconfig") you can decide what services get to run on startup. Some people say none of this matters when you have enough RAM and CPU for everything, but I prefer to keep my PC as lean as possible. More on reddit.com

If you know for a fact that your Java is up-to-date, it would be safe to kill the updater (but NOT any other Java processes- just the updater). This goes for other updaters, too (i.e. Adobe). Other processes include applications you closed that are trying to run in the background.

bloatware - What does Windows 10 "System" task keep doing in the background all the time? - Super User
February 17, 2021 - CPU load is not particularly high because System task is throttled to run at around 15% (as far as I noticed). However that doesn't help explain why it is running in the first place and if I can disable said 'feature'. ... System cannot be disabled. Try SysInternals Process Explorer to see if that helps locate the issue.

How to Fix Too Many Background Processes Running on a Windows PC
September 7, 2023 - As the name implies, startup processes begin running as soon as you boot your Windows PC. These programs are often responsible for your computer’s long startup times and run in the background even when unused. To reduce the number of startup processes, open the Task Manager and click on the Startup tab to open its menu.

If you have a factory Built PC, delete the bloatware... software that duplicates functions and utilities already built into Windows. Look at your software, if you have software installed that you use once a year, get rid of it. If you have McAffee, AVG or Norton Symantec AV software delete it/them. Enable Windows Defender, download and run scans with MBAM free now and again. Also install uBlock Origin as a browser add-on. Once you've cleaned house on your OS check your startups and disable the ones that you know you don't need running in the back ground. Google them if not sure. I also recommend Glary Utilities (free). If you take the time to dumb this software down, by going into it's settings disabling everything in the "General" settings, it has a pretty small footprint. Besides having a good number of utilities all in one place it also has a registry repair tool. Others may balk at this, but I have used this and cCleaners tool countless times on my own and others PCs over the past couple of decades and if there are corruptions and or conflicts this will make a noticeable improvement in you OS prformance. Much like doing a "sfc /scannow" at command prompt (as admin) for your OS system files. Do this as well just to check and see if you've had any file corruption. It will automatically fix what it can. If you have corruption then you have to find out why that is... and it's likley RAM issues or SSD/HDD issues. Anyhow, this should help. :)

Store probably runs for doing automatic update check.

To turn it off, go to Start -> Settings -> Privacy -> Background apps and set it to Off.
More info in the article: How to Turn On or Off Background Apps in Windows 10.

You might also in this case turn off automatically-applied updates by going to
Settings -> Update & Security -> Advanced options
and set "Choose how updates are installed", to "Notify to schedule restart."

For the calculator :

I believe that this Modern app is among those that Windows 10 tends to keep in memory if used once. It probably runs in suspended mode, using very little memory, ready to be launched quickly when called, which is more useful in a tablet than a computer.

Windows might forget about it if you kill it off a few times using the Task Manager before shutting down. If this works, I advise in the future to use a third-party calculator instead of the Modern one, or it will come back.

Disabling the SuperFetch service can prevent applications from starting on their own.

We've found out that with SuperFetch running, some applications are started in the suspended state automatically once or twice an hour, even after you explicitly kill their processes. This happens for Windows Store/Modern UI/Metro apps like Photos, Calculator, Maps, Weather, Time and so on.

How to Disable SuperFetch

From the Command Line

Run this command under Administrator:

sc config sysmain start=disabled

Additionally, stop an already running SuperFetch:

sc stop sysmain

From the UI

  1. Press Windows+R, type services.msc and press Enter.
  2. Find SuperFetch in the list, and double-click it to open its properties.
  3. Set Startup type to Disabled.
  4. (Optional.) Click Stop to stop an already running SuperFetch.

  5. Click OK to save the changes.

Solved: Running the so many unnecessary programes in the background. - HP Support Community - 7607682
May 15, 2020 - First off, you need to check in the Task Manager --> Processes tab to see which tasks are actually using the CPU resources. Simply because a LOT are running, does not many that many of them are using resources. I have 65 processes running and of them, only 5 sum up to 5% of the processor demand -- the other remaining 60 sum up to less than 1%. Second, Windows Update runs on your PC, in the background every WEEK -- whether you know it or not.
