r/learnspanish on Reddit: En la clase or de la clase?
June 28, 2021 -

I have learned that lots of times, in situations when English speakers say "in", we use "de" in Spanish. For example, "She is the prettiest girl in the class" is "Ella es la niña más bonita de la clase". And "en" should be reserved for truly physical location descriptions (like, "she is in the house" would use en). If in doubt, use de.

... Or so I thought. I came across a sentence today that is throwing me off. Why is "No one in the class was smart" translated as "Nadie en la clase era inteligente."? The translators all use en and not de. Is it something to do with nadie?

De is used in a lot of situations in Spanish, that I know (I'm Spanish btw but not a teacher or anything like that) De can be translated as from, of and about. One of the many things de can show is possession, but not placement or physical situation of something or someone, it does show origin as "él es de España" but that's it. Why I'm telling you this? Well cuz you been using de as in cuz you know you can exchange them and it will work but that doesn't mean their the same thing. Look, in the sentence "She is the prettiest girl in the class" your telling us IN that specific class she is the prettiest, "in" has the role of indicating us "FROM WHAT PLACE" she is the prettiest. But if you say "She is the prettiest girl of the class" your telling us of THE class she is part of she's the prettiest, "the" has the has the role of indicating us "OF WICH PLACE" she's the prettiest. Oke now we're gonna link this with de and en. "She is the prittiest girl in the class" --> From what place? ---> in what place is she the prettiest?---> en la clase. "She is the prettiest girl of the class" ---> of which place? ---> which place is she part of and the prettiest? ---> de la clase. De cam tell us the origin of someone, that something is part of a whole, that something is someone's property or that someone belongs to a certain you name it group, organization, club, class etc So with all those properties de was doing the trick as substitute of "En" But in "there was no one smart in the class" you can't use "DE" since there is no one signalable as there is no one smart, you can't signal any of them as part of, originary from, belongingness even if they all are. If you say "in his class no one is smart" you could use "DE" and it would replace nicely "EN" En su clase no hay nadie inteligente --> in his class. De su clase no hay nadie inteligente --> of his class. Not 100% the same but in the end both of them give you the same information, there is no one smart in that person's class. I hope all this was of help for you and is actually correct cuz as I said I'm not a teacher and I haven't studied my own grammar, I just feel it.

It seems a word-by-word translation from English into Spanish. This is quite common , and it's confusing for both native and non native speakers. You know, native speakers think they have always said something wrong. However, they don't even know that it is a linguistic calque (borrowing or Anglicism in this case). The same thing happens to non native when learning Spanish. They don't even know they're learning English syntactic structures translated into Spanish. As a native speaker, I would say "Nadie de la clase". Or "nadie en clase" (without the definite article).
