Particularly between season 4 and 5…
With as advanced as we are with special effects and as easy as it is to just throw on a wig even, it seems totally unnecessary to me. The difference in age progression when they changed the cast between seasons 4 and 5 was extreme.
We know that not that much time had passed between the two seasons (in the terms of years. We can see that, by the fact that Diana’s boys were young in season 4, and then probably middle school aged in the next, but they had aged the royal family in the next season with the new characters by at least 25+ years! Some lighter hair a few crows feet would have been just fine. 😆 The switch in characters just seemed completely unnecessary, and the difference in their ages was absurd if they felt the need to do it.

I think it was an inspired dramatic choice. It’s an artistic representation of how we change through time and over generations. Have you ever looked back at a photo of yourself from long ago and thought how different you are from that “girl” (or boy)? Or attended a reunion with peers who seem so much older than you feel, or think you look? It’s like that. The 90+ year old Queen was very changed from the 26 year old ingenue who took the throne. I’m afraid if they used prosthetics and CGI to age the original actors, I’d be thinking more about how they aged Claire Foy than being engaged in the story. Edited to add: I realize you mean between seasons 4-5, and your suggestion could have worked, but using 3 sets of actors makes it more like a trilogy which works aross 6 seasons.
