ELI5: The difference between Qualitative research and Quantitative research?
You can use the roots of the words to help you remember the difference. Quantitative has to do with numbers, like the word quantity. Quantitative research measures things with numbers. How many people like coffee? How many trees fell over in the storm? How many books do people read each year? You then take these numbers and maybe do some statistics or other math to come to a conclusion. Qualitative research has to do with looking at qualities. Maybe you taste a bunch of coffees and compare them in some way. Maybe you talk to people about their experience during a big storm and compile a report about how different people reacted to the stressful situation. Have a bunch of people read a book and describe it. These are all about qualities of things, and generally don't use numbers. Quantitative => Quantity => Research using numbers and math. Qualitative => Quality => Research using opinions and experiences, generally not using numbers. More on reddit.com

What Is Qualitative vs. Quantitative Study?
There are two distinct types of data collection and study—qualitative and quantitative. While both provide an analysis of data, they differ in their approach and the type of data they collect. Awareness of these approaches can help researchers construct their study and data collection methods. Qualitative research methods include gathering and interpreting non-numerical data. Quantitative studies, in contrast, require different data collection methods. These methods include compiling numerical data to test causal relationships among variables.

What Is a Common Goal of Qualitative and Quantitative Research?
Both quantitative and qualitative methods seek to find patterns in the data they collect that point to a relationship between elements. Qualitative and quantitative data are both instrumental in supporting existing theories and developing new ones. Ultimately, the researcher must determine which kind of research best serves the goals of the study.

August 1, 2011 - In contrast, this article attempts to show that the distinction between qualitative and quantitative research is unclear, poor and therefore of limited value and that its popularity risks leading to unfortunate consequences. Various arguments are presented for this conclusion. For example, it is argued that the heterogeneity of different stand-points on important issues among qualitative researchers (for example with respect to the use of quantification and causal analysis) makes the distinction as such unstable.
