There are five theories about what dreams mean in psychology. Two of them seem relevant here. The psychoanalytic view - which, I should point out, has no evidence behind it - says that our dreams are a way for your subconscious to send you messages about desires and fears that you can't admit to in real life. In your case, perhaps a desire to be male. However, this same view suggests that dream messages often use symbols in their meanings, so it could be something more subtle, like a fear of your sexuality, or a desire to be confident and aggressive and free of female restrictions. The cognitive appraisal threat simulation theory says that our brains are testing out scenarios in harmless ways - often used to explain nightmares. Sometimes these scenarios are realistic, but often they're disturbing (I had a dream that I was having sex with my mother... I had a dream that I was taking a test and didn't know any of the answers and I'm thirty years old... And so on). In this theory, your dreams aren't really important, but your brain might be trying to figure out whether your gender makes a difference. The other three theories are all different, but come down to 'they don't mean anything important'. One says that it's your brain's way of recording the day's events into long term memory - but since it's doing so at a very accelerated pace, it often mixes multiple events together into nonsensical dreams. There's evidence that this could be true, because our dreams usually involve people and things we interact with - farmers have more dreams about farm animals, for example. I have treats (we actually just use his dry food) that I keep in my left jacket pocket. When he walks next to me on my left side, I give him treats. You may want to start by keeping a treat in your hand so he follows along and then rewarding frequently. After awhile, you can start treating less frequently. You can also incorporate a "heel" command into this.

If you aren't already, never "reward" him for his wandering on walks - if he starts going in a different direction, stop the walk, show him a treat, and reward the treat once he starts walking alongside you again.
