My favourite essay so far is Julian Barnes account of when Guy de Maupassant called on monkey-loving Algernon Swinburne in France. Quite hilarious. Lesson: servants and monkeys do not mix. If you like your history offbeat – animals up before the beak, a woman who gave 'birth' to rabbits – you can't go wrong with this first selection of the best the Public Domain Review.
