It does technically require some plant management, but it’s easier than managing big plants: You can keep a jade succulent plant small by pruning its branches and roots every few years. They can handle a lot of chopping, and you can also root the cuttings by sticking it in soil—easy gifts for friends. For the small-leaf varieties, look for Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ or Crassula ovata ‘Crosby’s Compact’. You can also do this with Elephant bush (Portulacaria afra), a similar succulent, but I don’t have any personal experience with them. Answer from thebourgeois on reddit.com

April 22, 2024 -

Years ago I bought a Snake Plant from a thrift store (it was very sad and wilted, sitting in a plastic bag out in the sun.... they still charged me two dollars for it lol). This plant grew A LOT and I had to buy a larger pot for it, then I bought a second pot to move the rest of the plants into. Then I just gave it away to my friends.

Are there any plants that will live forever in a small to medium sized pot? I like having plants in my apartment but I don't want to add "plant management" to my ever-increasing to-do list. Thank you for any help.

Crypto parva, montecarlo, dwarf hairgrass, pogostemon helferi, hygrophila araguaia, rotala nanjenshan if you mow it and keep it in medium light, melon sword if kept in low light, and I know you mention you don’t want to glue them but if you can find some bucephalandras on the small side, you can totally plant them on the ground by burying their roots (not the rhizome though). 15 Tiny Houseplants For Your Indoor Garden
October 5, 2023 - This group is native to desserts of Southern Africa and is completely different from any other plant you may have encountered. They survive on almost no water – teaspoons at a time – and have a pair of fused leaves that gently separate to reveal an adorable flower in the right conditions. Although this is one of the tiniest of all the tiny houseplants on this list, it does come with a catch.

January 24, 2022 - Finding small terrarium plants that will fit into the most minute of containers can be a real challenge. And even then, you’ll want to be sure that they’ll stay small. I’ve been caught out before by an unsuspecting microscopic fern that only a few months later revealed itself as the monstrous giant it truly is. To help you avoid being lured in by the same trap, I’ve curated a list of tiny terrarium must-haves with everything from miniature ferns to baby vines and teeny-weeny foliage showstoppers.

r/terrariums on Reddit: Plants that are not only mini, but stay mini?
September 9, 2024 -

There's a lot of plants recommended for terrariums because they look mini due to their small leaves, but will still continue to grow. I'm looking for variants of plants that grow small, and stay small overall so I don't have to trim. I want a closed terrarium that stays closed, and looks like a mini landscape basically

Plant's goal in life is to grow and thrive and make more plants. Your best bet is to find some ultra slow growers. Maintenance is part and parcel of any living thing. To be fair, this sub is filled with lots of people who use tiny tiny vessels and put in plants that will well outgrow them quickly. When I am less tired I can probably give you a list of small tropical plants, but for now have you considered aquatic plants? Utricularia have tiny flowers and often look like orchids, anubias Nana petite is very slow growing, bolbotis, cryptocoryns. (Tired brain doesn't work) Small plants: brass buttons, syngonium fairy, fittonias, there's some small peperomias but they don't love to be constantly wet. Some are more forgiving. Cotton candy or fluffy ruffles fern, some calatheas and ctenanthe burle marxii stay pretty small. There's a few begonias that stay pretty compact. There's quite a few pilea varieties, the ones with small leaves are usually pretty good. I've never liked selaginella after a few months, and the creeping figs or mini Ivy are good if you don't mind maintenance. I've also had good luck wandering around a nursery and proplifting some of the moss, liverworts and tiny ferns that grow like weeds in the plant pots (thanks for reminding) me to update when less tired

One trick that works with some plants, especially finicky tropical plants, is to just deprive them of an ideal growing environment. Namely, move them further away from the light, use a less fertile substrate, and be conservative with rewatering them. A lot of plants will go "dormant" and stay small and not grow much but keep on living and staying attractive for months, even years if given just the right amount of light. If you've ever had a house plant that just never died or grew a new leaf but just kept powering on looking exactly as you bought it, it was probably dormant. Even with plants that stay small, keeping up maintenance by trimming new growths every few weeks will help, though very dedicated growers will start to look ugly after a few rounds of this. It's also not just the above-ground growth to keep track of, I've got a little "bonsai" fig plant I stuck in a 20Gallon terrarium and even though I've kept the vegetative growth in check, it's roots have so thoroughly colonized the substrate and drainage layer that it sucks all the water out of the soil within just a couple days of watering. Fighting with plants to keep them both nicely sized and attractive is a pretty inescapable part of the hobby.

January 22, 2025 - Although some alocasias can grow as tall as 6 feet, you can also find compact forms, sometimes called “jewel alocasias,” that are small enough to display on a tabletop or in a well-lit corner. These tropical beauties flourish in greenhouse-like conditions, so keep them away from cold drafts and don’t expose plants to temperatures below 60° F.
