In looking at this list, it's obvious that setting and tone are critical for me. Films like 2001, Apocalypse Now, Alien, Halloween, etc. do this so well and that's really what makes them special films. It's interesting to see this list, at least at the top end, featuring primarily 70's films. I feel that film was more daring in those days -- more groundbreaking. Directors were willing to go where most won't now. Also, the way those movies were shot (all on film) and lit blows most modern day pictures completely out of the water IMO!

After embarking on this journey to come up with my own statistical "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" list almost 3 years ago, I have finally finished this massive project and am pumped to share with all of you. Here are my top 250 and 500 movies lists from 2020 for comparison.
I went through data from 30 different websites this time for almost 5000 movies, including from the classic Rotten Tomatoes / IMDb / Metacritic sites to international gems like Moviepilot / Filmweb / CSFD / Douban, etc. There remains work to be done on weighting, compiling, and updating; building a platform that provides real-time rankings and data of every single movie ever released is the ultimate goal. Ambitious and maybe impossible, but we can dream. Feel free to share your feedback and ideas, or just reach out to me through this form.

I've seen the majority of this list. There are a lot of great films listed. However, movies can be similar to sports in that critics seem to overvalue older films (athletes) and undervalue/over criticize newer ones. Similar to Lebron versus Bill Russell it is hard to compare modern movies to anything made prior to 1970. Both can be great in their own way, but they are almost different forms of art.
