Hello everyone, I'm interested to learn programming as a complete beginner, and wanted to learn C programming as my first language. I came across Tim Buchalka's C Programming for Beginners on Udemy, as well as the Advanced course they have. It was on sale, so I got it and started it.
It seems to have really good reviews on the site, but I never see it recommended here, on GitHub places like OSSU and StackOverflow. Does anyone have any experience with it, and any insight into how it compares to any other courses?
So far there are a ton of powerpoint slides, and it starts off teaching some fundamental computer science theory.

Honestly, I took an online summer course at a local community college for $300 and it was fantastic. I’m 40 and literally had NO concept of computer programming or the underlying science. After taking a 6 week course, I’m obsessed and kicking myself in the ass for assuming it was too difficult or foreign to delve into 10 years ago… It’s one of those subjects where you can easily learn nothing and get overwhelmed if your not interested enough to keep up on the material and practice the concepts beyond minimal requirements. If you are serious about learning and practice a little each day, it’s easy to follow the logic and a fun challenge to problem solve. If you take an online class, it may be useful to use chat gpt to “talk through” concepts and troubleshoot code but make sure not to simply let it code for you. Interact, ask for hints, critique, explanations, and logic. It’s like having a personal tutor once you have the basics down. I’m still practicing and eager to advance my skills (even though AI will likely render my new skills useless by then… lol). Good luck and enjoy

If it is the one I think it is, I started the beginner one and found it was not a well prepared course. Sloppy with mistakes in the slides/programs if I remember correctly. Not terrible, but really not polished/reviewed. And not taught by Tim Buchalka (I did like some of his Java chapters, they felt well prepared). I did not finish it.

Many Udemy courses have thousands of reviews and are very cheap. Which makes me doubt their quality. And that is unfortunate.

Really great Udemy course recommended by another Reddit user to me Build Responsive Real-World Websites with HTML and CSS worth the $20. The user that recommended it to me said they build websites using the information they learned here. Also, not Udemy, but this coursera course which is free teaches you how your brain learns... This was very helpful information for all areas of my life. Worth it especially bc free Learning how to learn

I'm nearly done working my way through a couple of Udemy courses, both of them by Colt Steele. I think each of those courses was more than worth the money. I bought them each on sale, probably around $20 a piece, I don't quite recall. I'd recommend Colt Steele to anybody that thinks they would benefit from video instruction.

There are a ton of courses and I'm not sure which one would be the best for me.

I've never looked at any udemy course enough to actually judge any of them. That said: www.learncpp.com is the best free tutorial out there. ( reason ) It covers everything from the absolute basics to advanced topics. It follows modern and best practice guidelines. www.cppreference.com is the best language reference out there. Stay away from cplusplus.com ( reason ) w3schools ( reason ) geeks-for-geeks ( reason ) Programiz( reason ) Tutorialspoint ( reason ) educba.com ( reason ) thinkcpp ( reason ) javaTpoint ( reason ) studyfied (not even a tutorial, just a collection of code by random people) codevisionz ( reason ) sololearn ( reason ) Again. The above are bad tutorials that you should NOT use. Most youtube tutorials are of low quality, I would recommend to stay away from them as well. A notable exception are the CppCon Back to Basics videos. They are good, topic oriented and in depth explanations. However, they assume that you have some knowledge of the language's basic features and syntax and as such arent a good entry point into the language. If you really insist on videos, then take a look at this list . As a tutorial www.learncpp.com is just better than any other resource. Written by u/IyeOnline .
