Would your world meet the UN's 17 sustainable development goals?
Mythria Since my world is largely based on the late-14th century: unlikely. Roughly 4/17. While it is a trope that medieval people were extremely impoverished, the reality is that most people did not depend on money to live because of the free foraging of food and heating fuel; buying food was often an additional expense on top of what most grew themselves or took from nature. The biggest thing most peasants would buy is a pig, but that was more of an investment since, come slaughter, the pig would provide far more to sell than just its meat: leather, bones, fat, etc. all had value. Health and education are mostly similar to the same misconceptions. Diets were fairly balanced for the majority as excess sugar was beyond their budgets. Education, on the other hand, is very ambiguous; most people were literate, but only in their regional dialect/language; writing was somewhat the same case, only fewer depending on vocation. Sustainable living is a given since medieval communities often had small farming plots and gardens for food production. It's mainly the bigger cities that were less sustainable and were more dependent on neighbouring rural villages for not only food but fuels such as charcoal (which was a dirty production anyway). Decent work might not apply to my world, but the economic growth is mainly spearheaded by the extensive use of dragon slaves to work in the fields and mines. Large farms are harvested in greater efficiency with the dragons, who sport superior strength and endurance to work all day and night, albeit under harsh treatment. This has, to some extent, meant there are fewer jobs for humans to fill, leading to higher than expected levels of unemployment; this has the knock-on effect of causing increased banditry. are sustainable development goals a waste of time ?
No, they are not a waste of time. they are the only solution for societal survival in the long run. Better to have somehing rather than nothing. With time the urgency will become more obvious. Countries already taking them seriously, do already better than countries that don't. The more seriously they are taken, the more of a pioneer role those societies and economies are taking on, becoming the leading ones in future. See Netherlands, Scandinavia, etc. More on reddit.com
