Fuck UPS for laying off so many part time workers. They wasted a lot of people’s time in hopes of going full time and money. It should be a way to get all the union dues I paid back because I got no job security or the “great benefits “ that came with the job. They honestly hoed me so fuck them.

r/UPSers on Reddit: Confused on the layoffs
November 24, 2024 -

Just my opinion and thoughts but last year the 12,000 jobs they cut they specifically said it would be management. For the 20,000 announcement this week they didn’t state it. Will there be management in it ? Absolutely however I believe they’re continuing to do what they did all late last year.

Find a small hub/center that’s isolated, shut it down, all management is gone, offer the unions employees a relocation that’s 1+ hour away (to which less then half will take) and then they just got rid of half the unionized employees.

Anyone else realize this when you look at what they’ve closed thus far ? I just believe the smallest most isolated hubs will be affected. OR the hubs that were brought strictly in for Covid relief with other hubs very close by such as TOLOH, WCHNC, and RCHFL (which I believe all three are gone?) don’t quote me on that.

r/economy on Reddit: UPS to lay off 20,000 drivers, a year after agreeing to $50 an hour in a new contract.
July 9, 2025 -

Photo above – Matthew McConaughey proposes to UPS driver/girlfriend Jenna Elfman in the film EdTV (1999). This was before UPS drivers earned $50 an hour, so the motive was love, not financial gain.

Hey, Joe . . . wanna earn $50 an hour driving a delivery van? Local stuff only. No long haul, or overnight trips away from home. That’s like . . . zowie . . . $100,000 a year. Plus health and retirement plans. More than a teacher. No high school diploma needed, let alone a college degree.

Yeah . . . that was 2023. This year United Parcel Service is offering “buyouts” to 20,000 drivers. If not enough employees take the hint, terminations are sure to follow. (see link at bottom). Seems like it’s tough to make a buck in a market-based economy when your labor costs soar faster than inflation.

I wish no misfortune to befall the big-brown guys in their cute shorts. They sometimes even deliver my Amazon stuff. That may be because Amazon drivers earn $19 an hour instead of $50, and there are always Amazon driver vacancies.

Fed Ex drivers are doing even worse – average is $17 an hour. Teamsters get $22. Postal workers get $20 an hour, and you have to pass a civil service exam to prove you can read and write, don’t have a felony record, and are drug free.

Actually, I’m assuming all these drivers are drug free, and can read and write. They get the address right more than 99% of the time. Although my replacement Chase Amazon credit card appears to be lost. It was sent registered mail more than a week ago and has a United States Postal Service tracking number, but hasn’t moved since July 3rd. It's still a thousand miles away. Actually, it probably HAS moved, but whoever has it – legally or otherwise – didn’t scan it. This is why I missed Amazon Prime Day, Jeff. Your credit card didn’t arrive. I was eyeing that $69.99 SDKWDH LED therapy mask, which is guaranteed to reduce wrinkles. Who doesn't want smaller wrinkles, and bigger boobs?

Back to the UPS layoffs. So on the basis of this comparison, the United Parcel Service $50 hourly contract was a crazy outlier. Completely off the charts. I wish I’d predicted that layoffs would happen. Wait, I did, right after the contract was signed in 2023. And I pointed out that paying high school dropouts more than a teacher could be demoralizing to teachers, and tempt them to quit their violent schools for a safer career delivering packages. But they’d certainly be sorry now, if any teachers actually did quit.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

I am very biased as I am a UPS driver. If it was possible I would love for you to ride along with one of us for the day, and then tell me I am not worth my wage, (you forget my insane benefits which are more valuable than the hourly wage). This plan was in place pre COVID. And why are we the outlier? Why does Fedex and Amazon pay so little, we are all very profitable companies. But I will admit that I do see that Fedez and Amazon will drag UPS down compensation wise eventually, it should be the opposite.

UPS drivers do very well and staff up and down every year. In my area you have to work in the warehouse before getting to apply for driver jobs (and many people stick with a dawn pre-load shift even if it's short because YOU SHOULD SEE the health insurance they get. No copay, ever) I run an e-commerce warehouse and a few years back I took leave to be a drivers helper and learn a little bit more about that end of the supply chain. It is the most tedious job ever, and I say that as someone who packs boxes. The same houses, the same Tetris pile in your truck, the same tearing out your hair as you look for packages. Like Groundhog Day. I'm so happy it was only for three weeks; I could never have managed any longer. Now, at my warehouse, UPS deliveries and pickups always go off without a hitch. The next best is USPS, although they struggle with volume. FedEx depends solely on the quality of the driver. A lot of them leverage their FedEx experience to get a foot in the door at UPS. Amazon has the most shit for brains people ever, but I don't necessarily blame them. The Amazon 'pin' was in the middle of our parking lot for a while, so their system physically would not let them scan packages unless the parked the van on that pin. Then they schelpped it up to the building and dropped it against the wall. Amazon doesn't pay them enough to give a shit.

The absolute worst thing in the whole scenario is the CEO comes out and makes a bold, grand declaration of 20,000 layoffs, 70 something buildings closing by June and yet not one single statement to the employees is made. UPS just hates their employees. The real question is, why doesn't UPS Senior Management communicate with their employees. Time and time again it seems as though you're told to treat your supervisors with respect and you'll get respected in return, but yet here we go, thousands and thousands of employees are writhing, wondering do they have a job? How long are they going to have a job? Are they going to have to transfer? Seems as this entire management structure is zipped up and refuses to communicate plans or thoughts. It's absolutely terrible, and this is no way to treat the people to whom are depended on for labor and effort on a daily basis for production numbers.

These are the ones I know of in the western region: ILNOR, ILHAR, ILDAN, KSLAW, KSDGE, MOBOW, CARIV, CORIF, WI520, WASTT, TXEGL, OKALT, and AZPNI. I know a little more about ILNOR and ILHAR since I cover both of those sites (TSG), but the others I can't really speak to, except to say it looks like AZPNI is happening later than the rest. If I get word on any more, I'll come back and add them here. Edited to add CASTO to the list. If anyone wants to know if their building is on the list, I can look up the mnemonic to see if there have been any facility closure tasks released for it. Edit 2, additional closures: ALDEC (Decatur), CABAY (Bay Center), CACON (Concord Center), CACOR (Cordelia Center), CASUN (Sunnyvale), CASLT (South Lake Tahoe), CAWTD (Carmel Village), CT120 (Enfield), FLCLE (Palm Harbor), FLHOL (Hollywood), GASAW (Kennesaw), IDCOE (Coeur D'Alene), INWAS (Washington), KYDAN (Danville), KYHAR (Harlan), MAKSN (Kingston), MALEO (Leominster), MASBO (South Boston), MICIC (Cicotte), MIGAY (Gaylord), MIIRM (Iron Mountain Center), MIJAC (Jackson), MILUD (Ludington), MIWIX (Wixom), MSHER (Hernando), NCCHP (Chapel Hill), NCHIG (High Point), NHLAC (Laconia), NVFAL (Fallon Center), NYCOR (Cortland), NYLOC (Lockport Center), NYLTM (NY Capital, NYNIA (Niagara Falls Center), OHCEL (Celina), OHLAN (Lancaster), OHWAD (Wadsworth), SDHUR (Huron) I'll add any more I find tomorrow, plus any from the comments that I might've missed. Edit3: Adding FLLAK (Lake City), INAND (Anderson), INBOU (Bourbon), INCRA (Crawfordsville), INMAR (Marion), LANIB (New Iberia), and TXSMR (San Marcos) to the list. Still working my way through the comments and PMs, so if I haven't gotten to yours yet, I will! Not trying to forget anyone. Edit4: NJLDH (Lyndhurst)
