Any requirement to own a .us domain?
Just make sure the whois information contains your real address in the US. According to my research, .us domains don't have whois protection (I've never bought one though so not 100% sure), so I would recommend using a spare phone number, different email address, and maybe even a PO box to hide your real address if you don't want anyone finding it. A quick question about .us domain

Why wouldn't he register it? It's not a complicated process, and if he's the business owner then he should also own the domain. Simply tell him to register it and have him point the domain to your DNS (it's a one time thing and it takes 5 minutes), and you'll be able to set up a site and email no problem. It's certainly not in his best interest for you to own the domain.

As far as owning a .us you're not allowed to do that unless you live in the US or run a business there. Using someone else's information here could be fraud and very likely against registrar policy too, so if you insist on registering it yourself I'd consult with a lawyer beforehand.

Would you use a less common or country domain (ex: .gg) for your corporate forest/domain?
The only time I would use a country's TLD is if I'm in that country, or the business is. Why on earth would you risk letting a foreign government or their relationship with IT services in their country have any kind of ability to mess up your services, if you have no reason to connect your services to that country? Personally, I'm waiting for the day that .io, .tv, etc. suffer something catastrophic for reasons no one foresaw because hardly anyone actually has connections to those countries or knows the internals of their IT governance. Wow NEVER buy a .us domain without reading this first.
I would never recommend you do this, but… you know you can just make that shit up, right? Put whatever you want in the WHOIS… nobody will care. Just make sure the email address is accessible because if you want to transfer the domain, they will often email a transfer code to it. But the physical address and the phone number? If you were to just make it up and put anything you want there, it’s not like the domain name police are going to come to your house and arrest you. More on reddit.com
