If you lower your plan, you're liable for all remaining amount.
You won't be able to trade the phone in since you don't own it. It needs to be paid off before you can trade it in.

The catch with Verizon is that you have to have one of their premium unlimited plans (minimum $80/month AFAIK), and the trade in value is given in the form of 36 monthly bill credits. You also have to agree to a 36 month payment plan. If you decide to leave Verizon or want to upgrade before the 36 months are up, you have to pay off the remaining balance of the device and you forfeit any of the remaining bill credits. So, say you get a 256gb 15PM. Your bill will show a device payment of $33.30 and immediately under that will be a bill credit of $23.05. Let’s say 18 months from now, you move to an area where T-Mobile has much better service. You would have to pay Verizon $600 to pay off your 15PM, and forfeit the remaining $415 of bill credits in order to switch. By sticking with your current 15PM and trade in deal, you aren’t locked in to any carrier and it’s $580 up front.

I recently traded in my iPhone XS Max for the 15 Pro Max, and received an $830 credit for my trade in. Little did I know, when you upgrade using this deal, they “upgrade” your unlimited plan, adding $65/month. So now I have Unlimited Plus ($90/mo) and then on top of that, The New Verizon Unlimited Plan ($65/mo).
So I literally have an unlimited plan on top of an unlimited plan. And the extra $65/mo defeats the whole purpose of the trade in credit.
Definitely not happy, and wishing I had kept my XS Max.
Right now, our family plan has an option to trade in an old phone and receive a free iPhone 15/iPhone 15 Pro. We have to pay the sales tax on it/etc but the phone itself is free.
The salesperson said the deal might not last for very long and he wasn’t sure when it would go away. I have an iPhone 11 that is 3.5 years old, and it works despite having a somewhat crappy battery. How rare is this deal? Should I take advantage of the deal or wait until I really need a new phone?
Also how is this beneficial to Verizon?
