Very cool. I suppose it was only a matter of time, but this really cements the cloud-development approach many (including myself) have adopted. Now, between my remote instances and this, I can do all of my development from my browser. Edit: as u/StarOfTheMoon pointed out, you can't use a terminal in this. Although it's still neat and I'm sure people will find plenty of use-cases for it (I mean, you don't need a terminal to get something out of it), that definitely makes this a no-go for anybody doing any sort of development that's even a little complex ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ More on reddit.com

November 3, 2021 - Like in the desktop, you can customize VS Code for the Web through a rich ecosystem of extensions that support just about every back end, language, and service. Unlike in the desktop, it's easy for us to deliver customized experiences with pre-installed extensions through unique vscode.dev URLs (like vscode.dev/github and vscode.dev/azurerepos as mentioned above).

Hello, newbie here trying to adopt the ide that apparently everyone uses. I have the desktop version of vscode, but i love the idea of working on my projects on different machines. Thus i’m trying to use the online version but i cant even run any code?
Im getting this message from the run button: “Run and debug are not available in the web editor. Continue an environment that can run code, like a code space or VS code desktop.”
Any help folks? I appreciate it.

I have the desktop version of vscode, but i love the idea of working on my projects on different machines. Not a direct answer, but the solution to that problem is to master a distributed version control like git. It's a skill you need anyway, and has many more benefits than portability.

I use the self-hosted docker image, but I assume your question is about the difference between local vs remote server. The biggest ones are for (the most part), the general advantages that come from using a server. Server is better machine, can build things faster Server is always on, you connect and it’s ready to go, can continue tasks after you disconnect VSCode isn’t friendly to battery life, remote access doesn’t drain more than your web browser Also consistency, I can log in from any machine and all configs and dependencies are setup

I'm a sales engineer and do technical demos where I use a text editor and postman. I used to use the desktop apps but that means I have to share a screen and switch between apps in the screen. I recently upgraded to a wide screen 34" monitor and when I share the screen it's hard for viewers to see. So now I use the browser based versions of both and just share a browser window that I can size to fit. GDocs presentation, my company's app, backend app, vs code and postman all open in browser tabs easy for me to switch around and easy for viewers to follow.
