I got into the program with an AAS in enterprise software programming. Landed my first job a little more than half a year before starting the program. Which afforded me the benefit of seeing what’s realistic or practical vs filler material. The SQL courses and most anything requiring code are quite helpful and teach important basics. However, the program drastically lacks teaching students the fundamental computer science topics that explain the how’s and whys behind software development. You can make up for this on your own, but it would be a lot better to include them in the program instead of the generic help desk IT courses they use for filler. There’s a whole semester worth of generic IT fluff the program could really do without imo. Not because it’s bad to know, but it’s irrelevant to software development and takes away from your skill set instead of add to it. If you want a development degree that’ll prepare you for help desk technician and IT support work then this is fantastic. If you want to be a developer then prepare to do a lot of external studying as well. You’ll be able to get by, but interviews that ask about algorithms and have silly coding challenges will have gotchas that might trip you up as that material is only covered in WGU’s computer science degree. The program isn’t bad, and should be able to help you get a job. I just dislike how much it focuses on general IT instead of development. Hope this helps! Answer from Deleted User on reddit.com

Is WGU respected even a little bit in the software engineering world?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader . Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface . This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free. What can you do? Complain. Message the mods of r/reddit .com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit : submit a support request : comment in relevant threads on r/reddit , such as this one , leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit as much as you can, instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support! https://discord.gg/cscareerhub https://programming.dev 4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible. I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Thoughts about the Software Engineering program
I enrolled in the BS Software Development program in February 2022. When BS Software Engineering was introduced I opted to switch programs. I was aware of some super basic coding concepts but had practically zero hands on experience. That being said, If you’re a competent programmer it is possible to complete the program in a single term. But in my opinion that would be a huge time commitment. It really just depends on your experience level. I’m 26, I work full time, train Jiu Jitsu, lift weights, have a German shepherd, and a wife. All these things are time commitments during my day. At my current rate I’ll graduate this May. I’m finishing one class about every 1-2 weeks. Some months I slack off more than others. I always suggest to go for it. The program is the right mix of difficult but manageable and I’ve learned so much since starting. It’s well worth it. More on reddit.com

Review: WGU Software Development Bachelor's Degree
WGU was not easy. I learned a lot. I coded a lot. I wasn't able to coast, and I got a lot of value for the money I spent. I also gained a lot of experience and confidence. The best part is that I learned how to learn: read the docs, build a project, get certified, etc. I would recommend the program for anyone seeking an education and degree in Software Development...
