Car registration fee seems very high, I need some help.
Yes, and it's ridiculous. The silver lining is you only pay for emissions and registration afterward, as long as you keep the car. The system works out okay as long as you buy a car in Georgia and remain in GA, but they hit me pretty hard when I moved to GA, as well. More on reddit.com

I'm from out of state. Someone please explain to me this Ad-Velorum highway robbery, and why I'm being told I owe $962 + fees to register my vehicle.

basically the dealer association lobbied to change the ad valorem tax to one big tax when you first register your car and then pay like 15/year to get a tag after that.

they were trying to crack down private sellers flipping used cars and not paying as many taxes as dealers would.

a couple of years ago you could find a car on craigslist paying zero taxes and get it registered for like 30 bucks, fix it up and resell it easily for a profit. it made way more sense to buy from a private seller too because you don't pay any sales tax. now you pay the same tax whether you buy from a private seller or dealer.

it shifts most of the tax burden to people that buy/sell/lease cars often, but is a benefit to people that drive their car for a long time.

Does Georgia's ad valorem tax on car purchases require you to pay double the tax on out of state car purchases?

I just bought a car in another state. I live in Georgia. I did not pay out of state tax. I had the car registered in Georgia.

Ad Valorem tax on a vehicle sale
Nope. You pay sales tax at time of sale (4% in city of Huntsville) then a prorated annual tax once you register the vehicle with the county. 15 percent refers to assessment of the vehicle used to calculate the ad velorum tax. So if the county says the car is worth $50k the assessed value would be $7500 and in Huntsville city that would be a full year ad velorum tax of $435. Proration is because your renewal month is based on your last name not when you purchase the vehicle. More on reddit.com
