I worked for a remodeling company for 10 years. Never had any complaints. My only problem is they sold out and sell at the big box stores now. Answer from unclericko74 on reddit.com

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Showers - Any experience with The Onyx Collection?
September 19, 2017 -

We are researching a shower rebuild and had a contractor out today who (unexpectedly) also does work with a material from The Onyx Collection. It’s a groutless man made stone material that you make a pan and walls out of. From their site:

63% of our products is a hydrate crystal--Al2O3+3H2O. Alumina is also the main ingredient in Corian and all "solid surface" products. The main ingredient in our product is (alumina trihydrate). Our other 37% is a special polyester resin we developed over the last 30 plus years. Our resin does not contain any urea formaldehyde.

Does anyone have experience with this? What are the cons?

Cost came in line with tile from another contractor but $4k less than tile from the same contractor. Their pitch was “more expensive material, but saves on installation.”

My wife was sold immediately on the “no grout.” I’m weary of getting too smart with the shower and going with an unknown exotic product. But I’m not finding much negative on Google.

Plan is to be in our home for the long haul, so resale is less of a concern.

Thanks!

r/HomeImprovement on Reddit: Alternatives to Onyx Collection for solid shower walls?
December 16, 2023 -

Hi all, I was just talking with a contractor about a bathroom reno including a total gut of the stall shower. I've always envisioned new, more modern tile going in to replace the very 60s tiles that are in there now. This guy is open to doing whatever we like, but he really talked up the Onyx Collection as a solid, good looking product for shower walls (and pan, for that matter) that would also majorly reduce the labor cost. I took a look at their site, sent it to my wife, and she loves the idea for the ease of cleaning/not needing to deal with grout lines, etc. I, on the other hand, can't get past how cheap/Glacier Bay the colors and designs look, and how shiny it is. It's nearly a visceral reaction for me. I'd almost rather have a straight prefab enclosure.

I have researched a bit, and I am finding things like Corian or Dekton that look so much better, as well as a brand called Castico, which seems more on par with Onyx (but looks less like it belongs in an RV bathroom), but it's hard to decipher what the differences might be in terms of what's needed to install those compared to something like Onyx, not to mention price comparisons. Obviously, I would need to bring this up with the contractor (fortunately, he's a very easy going guy that I'm in a play with currently), but I want to try to do my homework ahead of time.

Any thoughts or advice that can be given on the topic? Thanks in advance!

Onyx is superior system for sure and does make keeping a shower clean way easier...its not cheap but this is because it is quality and adds as much value to ANY bath on par with top quality tile and installs. This vs Corian not close as CUTTING corian requires GREAT skill and correct tools while I can use my circular saw and a quality finish blade to make short work of Onyx. I have done 5 bath remodels using Onyx buy the matching alcove and all the matching trim and I have even done tile banding using Onyx to fill in above and below

Onyx Collection ... excellent. Awesome. DIY about 8 years ago Massive Finished size. footprint ... 40"x86" 3 sides ... 73" tall walls The 4th side ... "knee wall" 56" 48" tall Onyx coverage glass above Onyx knee wall, up 3" shorter than than "main" Onyx wall 30" opening Bench under shower head eats up 12" (not textured) (This is the correct spot for the bench) No nooks. Base same source, custom size/shape, blue, anti-slip, center drain, full height curb. Durable!.. so I had base in place during project, set 18v drill on top of knee wall ... yep, knocked it off and it hit the pan bit-fist (of course). Made a small divot, but hard to see, easy to repair later! Onyx collection materials made the corners easy to square/fit. I had no need for trim or molding pieces. First and foremost - looks great. Used blue base, bench top, and knee-wall cap, a white wall. Shiny is very good: It looks clean It feels clean Easy clean Easy to squeegee Amazingly easy to clean ... also can go weeks without an official cleaning. (Rules are squeegee some when done, take you products out with you, no bar soap). NO GROUT Room has a skylight and a window, so it is definitely well ventilated (natural air movement). Ordered at a local Lowe's. The on-line method is equally helpful. Later on - forget the time-frames, a pallet of product showed up at house! Avoid - dark colors. The "stone" products were "dull", and seemed over-priced. Also see note on "durable" above.

Cultured Marble vs onyx collection vs solid surface shower pan
When I returned to Lowes to look at more options (US Marble, Transolid, Swanstone) I was requoted $2,000 for an onyx collection base. I contacted grifform and their price was around $2300 for a solid surface base. A manufacturer in Ohio was within $10 of grifform but shipping was far cheaper as I'm in Ohio. For those of you who have experience with these type of materials used as shower pans, is the solid surface / onyx collection that much better to justify 3x the price?

Occasionally, the installer wants to use a special backer board and/or moisture barrier in their shower.
