The maximum amount of power you can draw with a light bulb in the fixture is 60W. So the bulb must draw no more than 60W. LED bulbs draw significantly less power than conventional incandescent bulbs, so an LED equivalent of a 60W incandescent bulb will draw something like 10W or less. Something to be aware of is that some packaging for LED light bulbs still might mention the traditional "brightness" equivalency in Watts, but, again, they actually only draw a fraction of the power. r/AskElectricians on Reddit: What is the brightest LED lightbulb I can put in a fixture with a max of 60 watts?
November 3, 2024 -

I want to get brighter lightbulbs, but I am confusing myself trying to figure out what I can use. The fixture says max 60w. I checked the ones I have in there, and one of them is 9w, 750 lumens (LED), and the other one is 72w, 1270 lumens (not sure if this one is LED or not). I didn't realize one was over the wattage limit.

If I search on Lowes for light bulbs and filter by 60w, it seems like almost all of them are 800 lumens. Is there any way to get more lumens than that without exceeding 60w? Or am I not properly understanding the wattage limit?

What is the brightest pure white light bulb I can purchase?
Kelvin (eg 2700K, 5000K) temperature merely gives you a different color cast (more yellow like sunsets as you go lower towards 2700k, more blue like midday sun as you go up towards 5000K+). It DOES NOTHING to bring more light into a room!! Lumens/lux/nits all tell you how much "brighter" a bulb will be. 60w incandescent bulb is typically 800 lumens. GE has a line of ultra bright led bulbs that top 4000 lumens! Lowes, Target, .... https://www.lowes.com/pd/GE-Ultra-Bright-300-Watt-EQ-Daylight-LED-Light-Bulb/1003123636 ..... 10,000 lumens+ will get you towards "daylight" bright. More on reddit.com

My lightbulbs are never bright enough. What specs should I seek in a lightbulb?
The metric you need is lumens. That’s the brightness measurement. We’re in a weird spot where lumens used to be directly related to power draw, but with CFLs and LEDs they label “watt equivalent” because people rarely knew what a lumen is. Going to a store is probably the easiest way to figure out what you need. More on reddit.com

What’s the brightest 60W or less bulb known to man? Tried to complete a speech check with neighbors, failed. Resorting to passive aggression now and need help.
The reason your light fixture is limited to 60w is because of the heat thrown off by a 60w incandescent bulb. If you switch over to LED you can get a bulb that is much brighter than a 60w incandescent bulb. You may have noticed that on the packaging they list the output in Lumens now. I think that's so you can match the light output between the different types of bulbs. More on reddit.com

A 10W LED bulb, for instance, can produce the same brightness as a 60W incandescent. That's because newer lighting technologies are much more efficient. Brightness is now measured in lumens, not watts. Lumens tell you how much visible light a bulb produces, regardless of how much energy it uses.

So, LEDs are generally about 7 times more efficient at producing light than incandescent bulbs. Use a 7:1 ratio as a rough guide when selecting an LED bulb to replace an incandescent bulb. For example, if you wanted to replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb, what wattage LED bulb would be roughly equivalent?

It is a much more accurate way of determining a bulb's brightness, as it is a measure of its output, unlike the wattage, which just denotes the power input. LED light bulbs for general use around the home will typically have a wattage between 5W-15W, and will emit between 300-500 lumens.

Used to be all you needed to know when buying a light bulb was whether you needed a 60-, 75-, or 100-watt bulb, and maybe whether it was clear or frosted. Nearly everyone had an idea of how much light these bulbs put out. However, with the advent of the compact flourescent lightbulb (CFL), and now the light-emitting diode (LED) bulb, wattage is no longer a reliable indication of brightness.
