CMV: The best measurement of how valuable a person is to society is the amount of money they earn
The way I see it, if you are valuable then people will give you money to do what it is you do. If you provide no value then no one will give you money. I disagree. If you trick people into thinking you provide value, they will give you money all the same. Remember those commercials for "Head-On - apply directly to the forehead"? They were selling wax and highly diluted arsenic. There was zero medicinal value, which is fine because they never claimed there was, they just made it appear that there was. This product made money. I don't know how much, but enough that your criteria would say they were valuable. Now lets compare that to Linus Torvalds. He made Linux and released it for free. It powers everything from the vast majority of servers you interface with to all android or kindle devices, many smart devices, etc. He's made some money in that the Linux Foundation decided to employ him and give him some money, but nothing about what Linus has done depended on people giving him money, he just made one of the biggest contributions to society possible and gave it to the world for free. Any measurement that can say HeadOn's creator was more valuable to society than Linus Torvalds is flawed. More on reddit.com

r/selfimprovement on Reddit: What makes a person valuable?
August 31, 2018 -

For a long time i've been thinking of this question and I struggle to find an answer. I get this feeling that no matter what I do, how I present myself, what i'm like, there's always gonna be plenty of people who are better or more unique than I am. So what makes me as an individual valuable?

What makes any one of us significant? If I work hard at a hobby or skill, there will always be people who are much better at it than me. If I try to make social connections, there's always other people who have way more interesting lives, do more things and can be more socially engaging, so why would anyone feel like i'm worth their time or that I am unique enough to wanna spend time with?

What is it that makes us unique, valuable, significant as a person, rather than just another human being living some average life? How can I feel like I am good enough, when there are so many other who are better?
