r/AskHistorians on Reddit: Was the name Syria used by medieval Arabs?
November 5, 2024 -
This isn't a question of etymology.
It seems that the Arabic native name of Syria is "الشام", but the modern name of the country seems to be "سورية" (also spelled "سوريا"). Was this always the case? When did the Syrians adopt the name Syria? Was this name known by the medieval Arabs who come from there? Was it a term exclusive to the Syriac speakers that come from the country?
