ELI5: Why has Putin been the leader of Russia for so long?

In the russian goverment Prime Minister and President are not equal and (normally) the land is leaded by the President. The President is the head of state and he appoints the Prime Minister.

While the total number of terms is not limited only two successive terms are allowed. In order to achieve a maximum amount of terms Putin alternated between President and Prime Minister. This is a legal strategy.

What was Putin doing during the final years of the USSR and his first years in politics?
Vladimir Putin was a KGB officer in East Germany and then he entered politics after the collapse of the USSR working in the office of the Mayor of St. Petersburg. He later worked as a deputy chief of staff for President Boris Yeltsin in the Kremlin. Yeltsin appointed him the head of the FSB (successor to the KGB) and then acting Prime Minister. Yeltsin basically picked him as his successor, and when he suddenly resigned in 1999 Putin became acting President according to the constitution, and later won his own full term in the presidential election of 2000. How has Vladimir Putin changed Russia?
In the two decades of Vladimir Putin’s reign, he has consolidated his rule and projected to the Russian people an image of Russia as a global power. He turned Russia from a nascent democratic state into an autocratic one, expanded Russia’s influence in the Middle East, strengthened Russian relations with China, and displayed a willingness to use force to achieve his goals, as in his annexation of Crimea in 2014 and his large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Why is Vladimir Putin still in power?
When Vladimir Putin was named president in 1999, Russia’s constitution limited the president to two consecutive terms. That’s why, after his second term ended in 2008, he served as prime minister before becoming president again in 2012. However, in January 2020 Putin drafted a constitutional amendment that would allow him to remain president for two more terms. It was included in a package of amendments that was approved by the Russian legislature and, in July 2020, by Russian voters in a national referendum.
