I have a current activated Windows 10 Pro edition. I keep getting "Feature update to Windows 10, version 1903 - Error 0x80242006" and nothing I have found online and tried has been able to get me past this error. Am I able to just use a .iso on a USB and update that way?

Yeah, you can even use the media creation tool to put the files on USB or ISO file, then copy them to a network drive. You can then run them from there too. That's my preferred method. Means I don't have to carry a Win10 Flash Drive around to all my users computers just in case I need to update to a new build. (using these files from the media creation tool is the method that fails the least often, so I always update with that method).

Your only option is to purchase an 8GB flash drive and create up-to-date bootable Windows 10 Installation media on that

For backing update system, do you mean you want to clone your system ? Clone would be dengeous and bring risk to your system, destroy your system security protection, even through it not occur every times. But for copy system, I recommend to use sysprep. For update issue, I recommend to make sure your system have no corruption files at first with running "sfc /scannow". Also try to diwnload update through Microsoft Update catalog website after booting system into Clean Boot environment. But if it fails. please check the event viewer log under system . But the simple way would be inplace upgrade to fix update issue.

You can download ISO from Microsoft. However, there is no guarantee that all drivers are available. My Lenovo laptop had trouble installing some drivers on Windows 10, so I decided to install Windows 11 drivers from Lenovo directly and it works!
