We all know there’s a new version of Windows on the way, but I’m curious.. what are your thoughts and hopes for it? What do you expect, and what would you personally like to see?
As for me, I really hope Windows 12 is actually built from scratch. Windows 11 honestly felt like Windows 10 with a fresh coat of paint. Underneath the new design, a lot of the same old components were still there. I’d love to see something that feels truly new, not just visually but structurally too.
When Is Windows 12 Coming?
Since Microsoft moved to an annual feature update cadence for its desktop OS, the next logical time for Windows 12 to arrive will be around September or October 2025, tidily corresponding with the end of life for Windows 10. But given the aforementioned blog post, that now seems unlikely. If we drew a parallel with the Windows 10 lifespan, we'd get Windows 12 in 2027. Yeah, let's go with that!
Despite not getting a new major version number, the 24H2 Update of Windows 11 is based on a platform codenamed Germanium, which powers the artificial intelligence features in the new Copilot+ PCs. In fact, who's to say that Windows 12 won't require a Copilot+ PC equipped with a neural processing unit (NPU)?
In a September 2023 interview, Intel's chief financial officer predicted a boost in PC sales due to the "Windows refresh" in 2024. Qualcomm, too, released statements pointing to Windows 12 in 2024. But, in retrospect, those must have been referring to the Copilot+ version of Windows 11 24H2.
One wildcard in all this talk of Windows 12 was the departure of longtime Windows boss Panos Panay, which resulted in a restructuring of the Windows version-numbering schedule. It seems that the new team wants to wait to put its stamp on a future release.
Another consideration is that Windows 11 has only about 43% of the worldwide market share among Windows versions (according to StatCounter). Windows 10 is still ahead of it, with about 53%. Introducing another version would split up the pie further, especially considering the glacial pace at which many people upgrade.

When support for windows 10 ends in October, will microsoft start thinking about windows 12? Or will they continue to solely focus on 11?
I'm glad I ditched Windows as soon as Windows 7 ended support. When they offered Windows 10 for free and started collecting large ammount of data on their users, I knew it was time to switch to Linux.
If I were Microsoft, here’s how I’d make Windows 12 the best OS ever:
1️⃣ Remove unnecessary bloatware and allow uninstalling Edge easily.
2️⃣ Remove ads from Start Menu and bring back clean, simple UI.
3️⃣ Focus on ARM support before it’s too late, as x86 won’t last forever.
4️⃣ Bring back Aero Glass, but modernized to compete with macOS aesthetics.
5️⃣ Improve driver compatibility and stability like Windows XP days.
6️⃣ Consider building a modern kernel that matches today’s tech if needed.
7️⃣ Remove heavy resource hogs like Game Bar, reduce telemetry and data collection.
8️⃣ Stop forcing Microsoft accounts and internet connection for installation.
9️⃣ Make everything simpler for the user, no forced services or promos.
🔟 Add a small built-in game that becomes nostalgic for future generations, like Pinball or Purble Place did for us.
If Microsoft did this, they would pull a “Windows 7 over Vista” moment and regain user trust.
But let’s be honest, they likely won’t because:
They profit from built-in ads and pushing services (OneDrive, Edge, Bing AI).
They think users can’t leave because Linux lacks app/game support and Apple devices are expensive.
Lack of real competition makes them complacent.
💥 I wish one day Microsoft gets “AMD’d” like Intel did in 2017 so they’re forced to improve seriously. It would be a win for all PC users.

If Windows 12 (successor of the W 11 OS) is in development, could it be possible to come out in 2027? Windows 7 came out in 2009, Windows 10 came out in 2015 (with Windows 8 in between in 2012) and Windows 11 came out in 2021. Between 7 and 10 is 6 years and between 10 and 11 is 6 years as well. Could Windows 12 come out in 2027 after 6 years of Windows 11?
Some sources say it will be released mid or late 2025 which claims I don't trust.
If so, isn't it better to wait until 2027 while continuing Windows 10 instead of upgrading to Windows 11?
If end of life cycles for the OS is approximately 10 years would you not be better off waiting two more years for installing the newest OS? End of support for windows 11 will be in circa 2031 while the successor will be supported until 2037 if it releases in 2027.
The media says that the feature of windows 12 will focus on AI and will also require a constant internet connection.

As of the writing of this post, there is no such thing as Windows 12.
Microsoft has not yet announced the successor to its Windows 11 desktop operating system. Anything you see online regarding Windows 12 is speculation. Even the name is speculation, we do not know what it will be called, it could be Windows 12, it could be Windows 14, they could ditch the numbering again, it could be called Windows You. Microsoft has a long history of not knowing how to name their products and successors, just look at the history of the Xbox lineup. (My money is on Windows 12 Home Premium Professional 365 Plus Copilot+ Enhanced)
When is it coming? We don't know. You can find rumors online pointing to any year you want it to say. They will announce it, whatever it is, when they are ready. That could be today, tomorrow, or in 2032. Maybe they want to stick with continuing to offer newer Windows 11 versions for a while longer. It is worth noting that both Windows 10 and 11 had simultaneous feature update releases for 2021 and 2022, so even if 12 is announced it does not necessarily mean 11 is going to immediately hang out to dry. Maybe there will be another major change to MSFT's management and they will decide it is time to shake things up with Windows again.
What are the system requirements? Again we do not know. My personal speculation is that they won't be vastly different than what we see today with Windows 11, but again that is speculation. It is highly unlikely they are going to require another massive bump in requirements or require something like an NPU, which only a small percentage of computers ship with today.
Can you upgrade from Windows 11? Probably. Again speculation, but they have provided upgrade paths for all their previous releases, and backwards compatibility is the strongest feature of Windows, so it is a fairly safe assumption that anything that natively supports Windows 11 should be able to upgrade to 12. One more time, that is also speculation, but based on actual history.
Will it be a free upgrade? Probably. Before Windows 10 came out, upgrading to a newer version of Windows almost always required buying an upgrade license, however Windows 10 and 11 bucked that trend and offered free upgrades. It is reasonable to assume that Windows 12 will follow that path, but it is too soon to say for sure.

24H2 is still technically Windows 11, so WHEN is WIndows 12 or 13 or whatever coming out?
I am seriously looking for a more stabile and better performing windows, and win11 and 24H2 is just not cutting it. When is the next MAJOR windows operating system (numbered) gonna release, or any ideas when it is gonna release at least?

Based on this history of the Windows support life cycle, I have predicted that Microsoft will most likely start developing Windows 12 in 2027 and release it in 2028 or in the previous year once Windows 11 has reached the 70-80% market share threshold and all Pre-Windows 10 operating systems are fully unsupported. I think what Microsoft's plan here is that they want all legacy operating systems of the NT 6.0x family to be fully unsupported and for users to migrate to the NT 7.0x family entirely.
Think about it, if you were them, you would rather that everyone is mostly in sync and using Windows 11 and then release the next update a year or two after it is commonly used at a 70-80% market share. Interestingly, when using the wayback machine and looking at the data, I noticed that once Windows 7 was unsupported in 2020, everyone migrated to Windows 10, then 2 years later, in 2021, Windows 11 was released.
According to insiders, Windows 10X was being developed, but once Microsoft realised that everyone was going to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and that it needed a refresh anyway, they figured, "Let's just make a new operating system!" Therefore, I can say that it is highly likely that they will do the exact same thing. It's only logical for such a large and powerful company to do so. As to what Windows 12 will be like? It's hard to say for sure, but I would bet that it would be A.I centred with a fully Neumorphic Fluent Design that is starting to see a rise in devices.
I think it will be a good operating system, fully bringing us into the 2030s. As to what Decade Servicing Model Means? It is the update model that I think Microsoft will most likely follow. Sun Valley & Hudson Valley are split into three minor updates corresponding to the two major updates, and that every 6-7 years, they will release a new operating system. So yeah, Windows 13+ will probably follow this update model. Not only is it economical, but it's just practical from a company standard.
