r/sysadmin on Reddit: Tools to measure windows 10/11 user experience
September 28, 2024 -

Hello,

Our default Windows image is visibly slow on modern hardware with plenty of headroom - meaning that's there's more than 50% RAM, CPU free and we're on new SSDs. I am looking for software and/or methodologies that would allow us to quantify "how slow?" followed by "what's at fault?" . I suspect it's the several endpoint management tools that all have their minifilter drivers.

What is Novabench and what does it test?
Novabench is a free benchmarking, stress testing, and monitoring application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It tests the core components of your computer - CPU, GPU, memory, storage, and NPU - using workloads designed for modern hardware. Each test produces a score that represents real-world capability, not just theoretical throughput. Beyond benchmarking, Novabench includes network speed testing with download, upload, latency, and jitter measurements, real-time sensor monitoring for temperatures, power draw, and battery health, and configurable stress tests to push your system under sustained

Novabench - Free PC Benchmark and Stress Test Software
Can Novabench test my network speed?
Yes. Novabench includes a built-in network testing suite that measures download speed, upload speed, latency, and jitter. You can also run traceroutes to visualize the path your traffic takes across the network and benchmark DNS resolvers to find the fastest option for your location. Network tests run alongside your hardware benchmarks in the same application, so you get a complete picture of system and network performance in one place. This is particularly useful when diagnosing whether slow performance is caused by hardware limitations or network issues.

Novabench - Free PC Benchmark and Stress Test Software
Does Novabench include stress testing?
Yes. Novabench includes stress testing that puts your CPU, GPU, and memory under sustained load to test stability and thermal performance. Stress tests are useful for verifying that a new build, overclock, or hardware upgrade is stable under prolonged use, and for identifying thermal throttling or cooling issues that only appear under heavy load. During stress testing, Novabench monitors and logs temperatures, clock speeds, and power draw in real time, so you can see exactly how your system responds to sustained workloads. Extended stress testing modes and additional configuration options are

Hello,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Q&A.

Based on the description, I understand your question is related to win 11.

Try run PC health check:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-check-if-your-device-meets-windows-11-system-requirements-after-changing-device-hardware-f3bc0aeb-6884-41a1-ab57-88258df6812b

Run a full system scan using Windows Defender to check malware.

Disable unnecessary startup programs that might be slowing down your system.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to remove temporary files and other unnecessary data.

Have a nice day.

Best Regards,

Molly

Hello,

If your Windows 11 system is slow, you can run the following checks:

  1. Use Windows Performance Monitor: Open Run (Win + R) → type perfmon /report → press Enter. This generates a system health report with performance issues.
  2. Check for Corrupt Files: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

       sfc /scannow

If issues are found, follow up with:

       DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    1. Check Resource Usage: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Go to Performance tab to monitor CPU, RAM, and Disk usage. If a specific app is consuming resources, consider updating or disabling it.

If the issue persists, check for Windows updates or reinstall the OS.

Some of the above and some of these can be used both for Troubleshooting and Benchmarking.

Please note that consumer-level troubleshooting software rarely specifies a particular piece of hardware so a lot of close observation is required.
